How can she understand speech so easily, and speak so ‘normally’ for someone who has only just had it turned on? I’m not buying it – I’d like to, and I believe that the implants work – but I’m not buying this.

There are a few different types of deafness, and I’ve heard that the categorisation of them is still controversial in the deaf community (big “D” deaf v small “d”, etc). This girl may have become deaf at some point after picking up her language skills. I’m far from an expert though…Any linguists or speech therapists out there care to clear it up?

she explains in her channel, profoundly deaf from just after birth but has had hearing aids all her life and studied languages etc. put the implant is a revelation. genuine stuff

some deaf people can talk and lip read proficiently.

the uploader sloanchurmman has commented on same Qs on her profile page:
“I had an implant put in 8 weeks ago called The Esteem Implant by Envoy Medical. I was born deaf and have worn hearing aids from the age of 2, but hearing aids only help so much. I have gotten by this long in life by reading lips. This was taken as they were activating the implant.”
“My whole life I’ve been complimented on how well I speak. I don’t really have an answer for you other than I have always had a passion for reading, grammar, and English. My hearing loss was/is considered severe to profound. I’ve worked very hard to be able to interact and blend in…..only thing I can say is ‘God is good’.”

here’s a clip of an 8 month old baby having the same cochlear implant. so amazing.

I’m not buying it….for a start, if she was deaf, how does she have such a pronounced American accent? And her speech is far too “developed”.

Yeah, the video of the baby is seems more genuine and authentic. I can’t say the same for the tatted-up hipster.

For me the comments for this post show now the overwhelming vibe from Broadsheet lately is that of negativity. This is genuine (if you take the time to look into it) yet there’s too many whingers/nay-sayers on here….. sad really
