Also: some neck.
Minister for Health Dr James Reilly and the Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald launching a ‘shock’ anti-smoking drive this afternoon.
From tomorrow, cigarette packaging must display graphic photographs depicting the potential negitive health impacts associated with smoking.
Wait until they go after obesity.
(Sam Boal/Photocall Ireland)

I must patent my opaque cigarette box holder of denial. €2 to you mate.
Three overweight people who can’t manage their own waistlines lecturing the public on their personal health. Makes me want to take up smoking.
+ 27.5 bmi
thank you i was just thinking the same thing especially when problems from being overweight kill far more people in this country then smoking
I cant wait until the day comes when it is socially acceptable to discriminate against disgusting, fat, lazy slobs.
it cant wait till i can eat drink and smoke what i want without having to listen to whiny D$$kheads going on bout it
I can’t wait until I can tell whiny dickheads who complain about how they can’t eat drink or smoke without listening to whiny dickheads going on about it about what whiny dickheads they are.
Does anyone else find it creepy / wrong that they look so happy in the photos? I think it makes it looks like they are laughing at them- “hahahaha look at all these poor feckers with serious illnesses”. Serious issue requires serious face – God knows Reilly has had plenty of practice using his…
Very true. Totally inappropriate.
Yup, the image of Reilly smiling next to the picture of the rotten teeth looks weird.
You still can’t get free dental care with the HSE though can you? No sir. Get yourself a medical card and you can have two fillings and as many extractions as you like, but nor proper, preventative, adequate dental care. No sir.
yup, a phoenix cover in the making..
Politician’s instinct. Always smile unless it’s a fooneral.
“negitive” ?????
I dunno. Those lungs on the right look better to me. Full of colour unlike those pasty ones on the left
The pale ones on the left appear to have been preserved in some way. Normal lung tissue is a sort of purplish red kind of colour and it’s all spongy and weird. Those are the technical terms btw.
Dr. Reilly need some PR advice.
I don’t think the problem is PR. PR are doing all they can.
Persistent running?
Pr. James Reilly, Minister for Health
Please
Above all else, he is entitled to his correct title
“Smoking contains benzene,….” Did anyone think to proof read these?
hah! Well spotted!
The Irish has deatach, “smoke”.
Indeed, smoking cigarettes causes cancerous.
laughing all the way to the bank ..
What the fook is he laughing at?
Until they can produce a cigarette box that smells as bad and feels as disgusting as the phlegm coughed up by a 75-year-old 40 a day smoker, there will probably still be smokers.
A 75 year old, 40 a day smoker should be the spokesperson for cigarette companies.
If they didn’t have to pause to breath between every second word and their voice didn’t sound like a cement mixer full of gravel I’m sure that would be a great idea.
That’s no way to talk about Mr. Richards.
‘smokers will not be around long enough to pay off all of our national debt’
This is going to get confusing…
10 thoughts on “Rotten” thats These Corrupt lying politician’s who are liars, cheats, and Rotten to the Core” these three shitheads! these pictures shows them for who they are as rotten to the core and sick wacko’s
Politicians like Reilly and Fitzgerald are fair game, but the other gentleman is the Chief Medical Officer for the Dept of Health, he is only doing his job.
An utterly incompetent and self-serving Department of Health.
The poor quality of civil servants is as big a problem, if not bigger, than the chancers we elect.
People like you are pathetic. Workers of the world attack each other! You have only decent pay and working conditions to lose!
Huh? I simply pointed out that our civil service are inefficient, badly-run and militant. They are a real barrier to good governance in this country unfortunately.
Would be better really if he concentrated on making the current shambles of a health system work. It is an embarrassing failure at present.
My cigarette case is all the more useful….have gotten a few of these boxes already though and none of them were graphic! Several pics of babies in respirators (well they shouldnt be smoking anyway) and pictures of sperm (god knows I cant tell a good sperm from a bad one)…another was a pic of a cigarette inside a syringe so I wouldnt get too worried about seeing plates of offal
Mine had a guy out of breath on a running machine.
I made a mental note to keep avoiding the gym.
And also to cancel my subscription as it’s costing me a bloody fortune.
“Here is my final point…About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography…What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, or take into my body as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet? And for those who are having a little moral dilemma in your head about how to answer that question, I’ll answer it for you. NONE of your fucking business. Take that to the bank, cash it, and go fucking on a vacation out of my life.”

Passive smoking
Its a myth. The usa study that “proved” that it was a real thing, and (copied by every country too lazy and scabby to run there own tests) was based on two groups , 10000 people who lived with smokers, 10000 who lived in a smoke free environment. The amount of people in the group that live with smokers had 2 more cases of developing lung cancer.statistically insignificant but the powers that be ran with the data and acted like it proved passive smoking was a real thing.now its considered conventional wisdom. But its all bullshit.passive smoking wont kill you.
long live bill.
Grand then. We’ll make sure to charge you the full cost of your lung/liver/whatever gives up first transplant.
Seeing as you don’t give a f** and don’t want us telling you what to do, you won’t mind the rest of not giving a f**k when you’re wheezing for that next breath and using up thousands of euros per day in treatment.
I’ve worked with people who have chronic illnesses as a result of smoking/drinking and most are destroyed by guilt and regret, mostly for the harm they do to their families.
+2013
then il stop paying tax cause the third of my wages a month pay for those services. Also i don’t drink or smoke i just support peoples right to freely consume.
also i’ve had family members die from smoking and i’ve lived with them through the whole experience and i still support there right to choose for themselves
This argument is constantly trotted out and it is pure bullsh!t. A whole series of studies in a variety of different countries has shown that the additional tax paid by smokers more than cover the cost of treating smoking-related illnesses.
Not if they buy hooky fags on Moore st though
Most people do not have the intelligence to have a society that operates like that or to truly consider the consequences of it either.
I know its unfashionable to disagree with stand up comedians but smokers are just unintelligent addicts.
I only wish we could take all your money in taxes without having to smell your breath or pay for your kind in the public health system.
So you’re basically against freedom. you sound like you have a fetish to dictate to people what personal freedoms they have also i don’t drink or smoke
I’m all in favour of free will but it’s just not practical.
As long as the state, via tax payers, funds medical treatment for people who choose to do things that are damaging to their health then the state has every right and obligation to try and stop them doing stupidly unhealthy things.
why not attack obesity first as it kills more people then smoking.
Smoking, obesity, lack of physical nutrition, poor nutrition; generally any behaviour you can think of that causes chronic illness comes out of being poor. So let’s attack poverty first. Howsabout you put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Of course there’s a role for education in all of this too and anything that denormalises smoking will undermine its impact in the longer term. No problem with putting pictures on packets of cigarettes whatever Bill Hicks would think about the matter.
Here’s the obesity deterrent: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/S2a9g5hA2bg/0.jpg

Then again our water is probably so generally dirty that if it didn’t have “safe” poisons we’d have higher diphtheria rates than [insert third world country here]…
well spotted!
-1 million.
Flourine is added to strengthen people’s teeth, especially kids’ and other vulernable groups’. It’s very cheap to do and makes a big impact. If you’re swallowing tubes of toothpaste as well it makes a negative impact. If you’re not going to have free dental care for everyone you may as well invest in preventative measures like this, whether they’re fashionable or not.
In the Red Scare, there were Youth Defense level nutjobs in America actively going about trying to convince the public that fluoridation and vaccination were a communist plot. Anyone against them today is a crackpot – they’re cheap, effective and help everyone.
These are exactly the same photos they use on boxes of smokes in the UK..
A picture of Frances Fitzgerald on anything will keep people away in droves. Just look at the last referendum.
All you need is that traitorous criminal smiling at you on a box and you’d probably quit pronto.
Some wag on Moore St “20 pack of James Reillys for a fiverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, the matches are freeee….”
I’ve seen that fella with the neck thing on cigarette packs in other countries (UK?), and I’m always more concerned by his moustache than his condition.
my smokes today had a picture of a slightly gone off apple on the back of them.
scary stuff indeed.
Fine. Delete my post Broadsheet, but leave the one that focuses in on one person, singling them out for ridicule.
And at the same time wring your hands and decry bullying in the work place.
Hypocrite much?
Ffs. If they were really serious about getting people to cut down and eventually cut them out
Bring back the packs of ten.
