Crisp. The Blonde American Lager is super refreshing in all the ways a stout can’t be. For one thing, it actually feels cold — something Draught barely ever does, to me — and it bites with a little citrus on the way down.
“Fast”. That’s how master brewer Joe Gruss describes the Blonde’s finish. He means the aftertaste vanishes almost immediately, leaving your palate clean for the next sip. After a bunch of “next sips”, I humbly concur. The man’s a wizard.
Guinness-ness. It’s odd, but in each sip of Blonde, there did seem to be an echo of that wholesome taste Draught is known for. Gruss calls that “Guinness-ness”. Blonde’s finish, he says, is “biscuity”. Unfortunately that doesn’t mean you get a biscuit every time you finish one. Go ahead and grab another beer instead….”

The fact that it’s only retailing in America for the first 6 months, surely means they’re afraid of our superior Blonde beer taste?!
Will give it a try…though know it won’t hold a light to the superb craft beers we have here.

It is funny when diageo try to jump on the ‘craft beer’ bandwagon. Two years ago when they launched smithwicks pale ale which flopped they were sending out promo people telling drinkers that it was like erdinger which is a wheat beer not a pale ale. I know because one of them told me and he told everybody else in the bar. I just wanted a freebie said nothing
Actually it’s not a bad pint. Better on draught than from the bottle.

I did a focus group for Guinness last week on their new lagers and craft beers they are brewing up.
Fantastic stuff altogether. Some great flavours coming out and nothing like that Breo shite they pulled together.
Don’t knock these new batches until you’ve tried them. I was thoroughly impressed.

Diageo should learn from the Belgians,buy a stake in craft brewers, afford them distribution give consumers choice and reap the rewards.

Bulmers have also brought out a new ‘craft’ lager called clonmel 1650 or 1650 clonmel. It may be a reference to Beverly Hills 90210 no sorry a famous siege in 1650.
The thing about diageo is that they are in no way proactive. They were happy to keep on serving us the same stuff until some new beers emerged. Then they decided to take action. Their only new products have been smithwicks pale ale, Guinness mid strength and the new bottled varieties of smithwicks.

so it feels cold – the colder the beer the less ‘taste’ of lager there is for those who dont like it but want to drink beer. a problem they’ve had with young people and a lot of american drinkers is getting rid of the ‘taste’. maybe diageo should be looking at this taste, possibly improving or altering it rather than trying to mask it.
its aftertaste disappears almost immediately – again for those who dont like the taste of beer but want to drink beer. Imagine a nice whiskey or a lovely glass of red wine, even a sugary soft drink where the lingering aftertaste of flavours (part of the experience of taste no?) just disappears almost immediately. You’d pretty much call it cheap p**s.

I once had the misfortune to hear some big brand rep refer to a rum as ‘the rummiest of rums’. they were attempting to sell this as a premium brand but you’d be forgiven if you thought they were trying to sell it to pre-schoolers. A wang of emperors new clothes here from the PR guff ‘you can taste the guinness-ness yes?” “no..well…” “try again. drink deeper” (5 pints later) “oh yeahhssshh i foundsh it thash so guinnesshy ness you were bang on the money. bishcuits you say? lovely”
