For the life of me I cannot see,
Why a culchie would want a degree,
They’re wasting resources,
That could go on courses,
For decent folk like you and me.

Isn’t this a triumph of our “free” education system?
Isn’t this a question of expectation and effort?
As Billy Joel says in Allentown:
“Every child had a pretty good shot, to get at least as good as his old man got”
Expectation: In areas like D17, there are plenty of instances of 3rd generation unemployed, and a culture of not expecting or wanting to work. Yes, there are exceptions, but I work with SVP in the area and I know this to be true.
Expectation: In D6, we have a high proportion of professionals, and there is an expectation on the kids to perform.
Effort: I married a farmer’s daughter. She and her siblings worked damn hard to succeed, as the farm would only give a living to one child. College was the way to a decent living.
Exactly. No room on the farm -> only way off the farm.
Something to keep them busy waiting for da to retire/die so they can get their hands on the 60 acres of bogland and associated massive subsides for ineffecient/ineffectual agriculture.
Factor of 10 to many farms on this island
