Apparently he was originally sketched as a piece of pineapple, not a sponge… hence why he lives in a pineapple (and looks like a chunk of pineapple).

I watched an episode in Greece where he’s know as Bob Sfoungaráki̱s (pronounced Bob soonga-rakee).
In Turkish he is Süngerbob Kare Pantolon.
The Spanish one is my favourite – Bob Esponja which sounds like Bob A Spunka to Irish ears.
