RTÉ reporter Brian O’Connell spoke to several drug addicts in Dublin’s inner city – within two minutes’ walk from O’Connell Street – about a new drug that’s being sold as crystal meth but is, in fact, a drug called MDPV. It was formerly sold as bath salts in headshops and is generally snorted.

Mr O’Connell said for the last few weeks MDPV has been sold from two locations in Dublin and that 50 or 60 people are calling to these locations every day for the drug.

One man, who has been on heroin for the last 8 years on and off, told Mr O’Connell:

“I smoked three bags of heroin in a row to come down off it, it was that bad, I ended up throwing it away. But I’ve seen people who are strung out on it now, injecting it, smoking it, it’s just completely different. The way they go on, they’re paranoid 24/7, they think people are after them, they’re looking for things that aren’t there, crazy…
People are only on it a week or two and you can see their appearance, they’re tearing themselves, they’re like scratching themselves, there’s big scabs all over them, it’s like it’s eating them from the inside out…There’s been a big explosion of this in the city centre itself, do you know what I mean? So the police are really going to have their hands full when it really gets a grip of people…I
t’s not fair on the public, do you know what I mean like? Because they have to witness it swell. Like I’m on [heroin] eight years and I never once used a needle. And you see dirty needles all over the place. We had to tell a mother and father to pick their child up off the Boardwalk the other day instead of letting them crawl.”

Any excuse, in fairness.

Glad to see heroin junkies being used as reliable sources. Hope it’s not the same lad I go to for advice on my stock portfolio. I need him focussed.

I’d say someone deeply involved in illegal and highly addictive drugs is a better source for information on said drugs than your average Joe Duffy caller.

That’s the first time I’ve heard an iota of sympathy for the public. Hallelujah. Sick of them staggering around like zombies looking for money, smokes and tearing the faces off each other.

This new drug’s not fair on the public but the usual heroin, coke and assorted tablets are all fine of course as are screaming across the city at each other, fighting, robbing handbags, shoplifting, passing out on the street and hurling torrents of abuse at anyone who says different.

In fairness, the few unpleasant souls who act like this on alcohol usually restrict themselves to a few hours at a time, but for junkies it is a full-time job.

actually if you listen to the audio piece instead of the badly edited transcript here, he sense the general situation is not fair on the public

It’s really shocking when you’ve been away for years and you come back to what looks like the whole of O’connell street has been taking over by zombies. .. The Champs-Elysees of Dublin whah ?

Vulture capitalists are being sold property assets here, at a discount AND with Tax Breaks (i.e. costing you and I money) whilst social services and mental health facilities are barely coping (if at all) on increasingly reduced state funding, to the point of near barbarity – are we living in a society or some parasites portfolio?

This new economic politic will cause serious state instability when the more articulate classes start getting screwed.

reports on the drug forum are suggesting MDPV is being used as a study aid at low dosage. feckin students..

probably cos they follow the ‘full duck or no dinner’ school of inebriation. like most compounds, the only difference between medicine, hallucinogen and poison is dosage. if they tried mdpv at a low dosage and used it as a pick-me up, aphrodisiac, whatever, and at reasonable intervals then they wouldn’t have such health problems.

What a hero! We need more smackheads like this.
