Ripoff? What Ripoff?

Deputy John Lyons called out the Vintners Federation of Ireland AND the Licensed Vintners Association on the price of a pint in Dublin city centre in an Oireachtas Committee meeting earlier.

Dónal O’Keeffe of the LVA claims there are pints in Dublin available for a splutterful €3.50.

Deputy Lyons ain’t buying it (were it indeed available, anyone?).

Lyons for Taoiseach.

Of course there are pints available for 3.50. They just happen to be part of a mid-week and mid-afternoon promotion (in pubs primarily out of the city centre) that the majority of punters cannot avail of (due to, frankly, work).

This is disgusting, I’m hardly surprised that whenever I visit Dublin, it always appears to be populated by alcoholics. Beer prices need to be increased now, for the sake of your livers!

“In my opinion” “I personally think”

real orator that guy. Joe Duffy eat your heart out.

Would it kill you to dress properly?

O’Reilly’s on Tara Street have €3.50 pints 7 days a week. PantiBar also has great deals Mon-Sun. Cheap pints can be had in the city, just don’t be picky about the beer.

The LVA et al always quote the lowest possible price that might be found after a 24 manhunt style search. They also love saying how the pub is a safe and secure place to enjoy alcohol. They must have paid some PR goon for that piece of copy about ten years ago. They keep trotting it out as if your home is a horrific death trap full of danger for anyone drinking a can of beer in front of the telly.

    1. Why??

The Villager in Chapelizod…€3.50 a pint and €3.50 for Shorts ALL the time. But, yeah, these kind of prices are about as easy to find as extra-terrestrial life.

Ah the Vintner’s Federation, everyone’s least favourite interest group. The arch supporter of restrictive practices which by European standards are a thing of the past.

But of course don’t expect any real changes to the licensing laws in this country, given the fact that every bog politician in the country hosts their clinics in a licensed premises….

why is everything about ‘the bog’ or ‘culchies’ with you? Why do you always associate the undoubted weakness of the political class with ‘the country’ when it is at least equally evident in Dublin? You need to look beyond accents and delusions of grandeur to stop looking down your nose at the majority of the population.

        1. Jam

What exactly are you leaving here? How is this relevant? I am genuinely confused. Are you suggesting that a small minded superiority complex is justified as a result of court proceedings taking place in a function room due to a lack of designated court facilities a few years ago?

          1. scottser

while i don’t actually agree with mr lefronde above, i found your over-reaction to his comments in need of a little balance. the article speaks for itself in terms of cultural differences between dublin and the country. there’s no need to upset yourself – it’s only the internet.

        2. trobuff

Scottser, they held the court proceedings in a function room due to cuts which originated in the Dáil, in Dublin. The problem is with the country, not any particular county. Sure Dublin is where everyone comes to do their worst.

On another note, Michael Healy-Rae’s been getting the same bus home as me of late. Fine, austere men, them Healy-Raes.

And this at a Committee meeting for the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation!! The price of a pint…

The Tourism issue rings true.. Speak to tourists impression of temple bar when your abraod and they are scarred by the expense of it.. THEY REMEMBER THE 6 shots that cost 50 euro or whatever.. As for the repeat business arguement put forward by the vintner? BS… TB recycles itself every night and the pubs that rip people off in it are laughing all the way to the bank. Dubs down go for a rake of pints in T bar. They know better.

I’m going to move fro Wexford to Phibsboro. €4.30 for a pint of Carlsberg here. Bring on that liver transplant.

I had some lovely pints of cask conditioned London Pride in Weatherspoons Blackrock last week for €1.99 each.

It sure is, a lovely pint of ale with a delicious pie, mmmmmm. Thanks for the pies, go England!!!

    1. Optimus Grime

That’s cheaper than the offy for London Pride! Why oh why did I move out of the city? I could have saved millions!

“It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard’.”

  10. Ernie Ball

If you don’t like the price, don’t buy it. To pay the price is tacit endorsement. But I forgot: not buying is not an option for alcoholics, who comprise a large portion of the Irish population.

  11. Jack Ascinine

Those vintner guys had the opportunity to rip those politicians out of it and they did nothing. The politicians had them on the back foot. If they don’t like the price of a pint, reduce the tax on it and reduce the rates pubs have to pay. As he said, the govt are getting 23% of it so neither one of the groups are complaining. It’s all lip service. And as long as there’s a jackass to pay €7 for a pint, there will be a jackass to charge €7 for a pint. I’d be selling my kids’ drawings on the fridge as high class abstract art if I knew there was a jackass somewhere to pay for it.
