They should concentrate more on writing decent songs and give up with the gimmicky videos.

That, or just head straight to making commercials.

If they didn’t have the gimmick videos nobody would listen to the songs. They are pretty good at churning out gimmicky videos time and time again.

“Do you worry that your amazing video work could overshadow your audio work?”
        Damian Kulash:
“No. We get this question all the time. But think of it this way. I am a chef. You are in my restaurant. And you are asking me if I am worried by the fact that we are known for our incredible desserts. I am very, very pleased that we have such good desserts, and that they are known around the world for being delicious and singular and unique and unlike anyone else’s desserts. As it turns out, I also make very good main courses. Many people also come and enjoy them. If millions come in for the desserts, and hundreds of thousands also find they like the main course, awesome. There are no bad customers in this restaurant.
See, the question you’re asking basically masks a way of thinking about creativity (or, more accurately, people’s creative careers) that seems… stuck in another century, I guess. That’s the idea that creativity and creative people are supposed to stay in particular boxes that were defined by the way our products used to be distributed. It used to be that music and film and video games and journalism were actually very different physical objects with industries built around selling and distributing them. Now all of us make ones and zeros. I spend my time chasing my creative ideas. My process generally starts with writing songs, but it leads to a lot of other fun places. I feel bad for musicians who get trapped in the box of “music” as it was imagined 30 years ago. Some people like it in that box, but a lot don’t. A lot of people wish they got to chase all of their creative ideas, not just the ones that involve their guitar. I am that lucky guy who is not trapped in that particular box.”

Or it’s a bit like Rustic Stone. Their steaks aren’t bad but they aren’t great either. But you get it served to you on a hot stone so can decide when it’s cooked enough for you. You get the whole gimmick that’s enjoyable but you wouldn’t go for it if it was the steak on it’s own.

As I understand it, you get to charge for desserts in a restaurant. His analogy is flawed. They’ re more like a time-share company. The promotional material is great, get’s you all excited for the product but ultimately you end up disappointed with a bedsit in the taint end of Bulgaria.

I think his point was that they aren’t musicians who make videos to promote their songs, but that they are creative people who like to express themselves in more than just one way.

Duh! they don’t make the videos’ numpty, the director does. They star only in them. Probably only involved in the video for a week. Pretty good pay off considering this video’s garnered 8.5 million hits in a few days. Even if they didn’t sell one copy of the single they’ve still done pretty well out of YouTube $$$ alone.

      1. Parky Mark

The lead guy in the band also directs the videos. Maybe do some research before you make your comments. Maybe credit should actually go to Honda for coming up the the unicycle used in the videos.

        1. munkifisht

May you should do some of your own research before you make your own comments. It was directed by Morihiro Harano….

          BOOM!!!!! OH NO HE DIDN’T

Due to the age we live in, the final part was so impressive I refuse to believe it isn’t fake and just CGI. Which is a little bit sad.

I like the way it shows the landscape at the end.
But that is tainted by the falsity I have projected onto the umbrella bit before it. That is all.

Adam Buxton tweeted about this video. He also tweeted the video shown below.
It is also gimmicky and there is an emptiness there, but it is initially striking.

Maybe take note of its stylistic devices/effects but don’t be tempted into its idealogical framework e.g. its potential as cultural capital within the hipisphere.

I’m pretty sure that the final bit is not real. There’s a bit of crowd duplication going on there.
