A Funked Up Fixie [distinctive custom made bike] locked TWICE with Abus and Koog locks. The lads climbed onto a wheelie bin unscrewed 2 signs, made off with bike OVER the pole. Corner of Fade St./Drury St [Dublin] outside Fade St. Social on Saturday morning. I know two bikes taken from that area. Same morning…

Anyone?

Obviously these fuddy muckers are not being deterred by the threats provided by the law. Time to bring things up a notch?

Judging by the rate of bicycle theft in Dublin, how difficult is it to set to a police sting operation? Seriously, you would have to lock a decent bike somewhere around Grafton / dame at set up a van with a camera and catch them. Maybe they are doing this and the revolving door court system just has them caught and back out robbing the next day.
Is there no party in Ireland strong on justice or calling for reform? The public want more prisons with more basic facilities and way longer sentences. Get the army of criminals off the streets. What is stopping this? The judiciary? Budget cuts?

    Get the guards
they’ll be down dusting for prints in no time.
    Major crime.
    Bring back the death penalty.

Hey man, are you gonna find these guys? Or, you know uh, I mean, do you got any promising uh, uh, leads? Or–
Leads, yeah sure. I’ll uh, just check with the boys down at the Crime Lab. They uh, got uh, four more detectives working on the case. They’ve got us working in shifts.

What an ass. As posted above, how hard can it be for the boys in blue to set up a sting. Many people in this city rely on their bicycle as their main mode of transport.

There is only one cog on the back and there’s a freewheel mechanism (so you don’t constantly pedal when you move). Usually you’d say single speed. Fixed gear is where you stop pedalling to brake.

I’ve never cycled a fixie, but I’ve had enough chains break over the years to be terrified of using one without a front brake, especially with the extra stress the chain would be under if you’re using it to stop the bike.

      1. Parky Mark

I’ve never had a chain break in 30 years of cycling. Luckily if it did happen I have feet on the ends of my legs that I can extend down to the ground to slow my pace. What happens if your front brake cable snaps at the same time as your chain?

F*ckers. Definitely a van doing the rounds. Pity the cops couldn’t be arsed. Kneecapping would be too good for these thieving pr*cks.

    1. Ciarán

Kneecapping cops because of laziness would probably bring you into a lot of trouble.
But I like the direction of your thinking…

It seems even those in possession of zero IQs, who have difficulty reading plain English, are drawn to Broadsheet.

To be honest I would be impressed by someone with zero IQ reading plain English.

I hope they are caught and the judge sentences them to be your personal rickshaw driver until enough of their dole money is reassigned to buy you another bike..

Real shame, looks a nice bike. Did you leave it overnight?

On what is a busy street its strange that these guys could stand on a wheelie bin, dismantle a sign and slide a bike up the pole without someone noticing.

Definitely getting bike insurance is the moral of this story

Oh no! You’ve just shattered my peace of mind. I thought Drury Street car park was safe as houses for bikes. It’s the only place in town I leave my bike these days. I suppose there’s no point canvassing politicians to ask the Gardai to get their finger out and set up a sting?

  6. Wayne Carr

Bike parking in Dublin is a disgrace. It’s why I have to leave my fancy bike at home, and use the DBS if I’m in town and need to make short journeys.

  7. Hashtag Diversity

Bummer. How are you going to cycle to your volunteer job at the Web Summit now? On the brighter side, thank God it wasn’t a decent bike.

    1. Lara

Ouch… Hashtag Diversity! Who woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning!? Kick me while i’m down!

Fade street is terrible for bike thefts. I’ve had mine stolen from there, as has my friend. Use the bike park on drury st.
