This part of the article is far more interesting (via Google Translate):

“The lobby Confederation of British Transport (CILT) proposed last week for the construction of a railway tunnel between Britain and Ireland. For 19 billion euros the 120-kilometer link between Dublin and Holyhead in Wales would be feasible. ”

It suggests that the UK is looking at a link with Ireland as a means to improve their own economy and the idea of this tunnel was being taken seriously.

This would be great, assuming passenger trains would also be accommodated. High speed train would get to London in what, 3 or 4 hours?

Would it not be much more convenient for the vast majority of people to just get a Ryanair flight to England? I don’t see a 19 billion rail link as financially or commercially viable.

In fairness, when I was living in Vienna, I did nothing to to negate this stereotype. I was an absolute p!sshead over there. Great craic.

Well feck me. The OECD has Austria ranked at number 2 in the most alcoholic countries in their umbrella drinking 12.2 l/capitia. Ireland’s doing poorly at 11.6. The WHO has Austria listed though much lower at 10.3 l and Ireland at 11.9.
