I don’t see the point of the scheme in Galway. It’s a woeful place to cycle and too small to be of any benefit.

If you needed to go from, say the University out to GMIT or ballybrit or somewhere and have no car then you have to have a bike. I think they would get great use, even in the city centre alone. They’ll have to be well managed though and swapped around to make sure there’s spaces and bikes where required.
More of a problem is the backward step of removing public bike parking facilities in order to make way for these. They should complement private bike use, not replace it.

if you look at the station map, they haven’t even spread out properly. the longest distance between starting is Like 2 km, or a 5 minute cycle.

Yep, it’s a bit ridiculous when you also consider that most of the city centre is pedestrianised and the bike lanes phase out the closer you get to town. They have said they will roll out stations in Salthill, Renmore etc after this pilot scheme but in the meantime this system mainly works if you’re going, say, from NUIG to Eyre Square or Spanish Arch, not a huge distance really or one that will help the commuter. It’s a good start like, encouraging more bike use in the city, especially if it leads to better infrastructure, but if they’d had a bit more foresight with the location of docks it would have been far more effective.

Had a spin on one last month.About the same as a dublin bike really. Terribly useless baskets made from elastic though. Lots of parts that can be removed with conventional tools though which is worrying.

The black is just 100% Coke branding, I assume. Dublin Bikes were already blue before the sponsorship was rolled out.

Why black? It’s called brand association. Coke Zero fecks up your metabolism, according to some, because it creates an appetite and expectation for your body to be fed with sweet things. And black bikes are more difficult to see in the dark, which increases the chances of you fecking up your whole body in a crash. Personally, I preferred the Coke bottle design branding and the first names campaign.

Nah you can’t beat Dublin Bikes. Look at the great baskets we have compared to these bad boys. I’ll give you the cooler paint work alright but the value of a basket is easily underrated. I missed my DB basket when cycling in London last year. You need a good basket! I heart baskets

They get black ones due to corporate sponsorship. We have blue ones because an attempt was made to make the design of the bikes a part of the city.

The bikes look nicer, but unfortunately match the Coke ads so well that it gives the appearance of advertisement first and public service second. The flags and the Galway Advertiser offices aren’t helping.

Careful putting expensive stuff in the baskets!

I was walking home the other night near Holles Street and saw a guy on one of the Dublin Bikes (nearly) have his bag robbed right out of the basket. He was lucky that he kept hold of it – looked like it might have contained a laptop.

“How come they get the cool black ones?”

That would be Ireland’s “immigration” policy.

Those flags were a success weren’t they?! Galway written backwards on this side.
Thing is, look again and imagine walking to the other side of them. Yup, now it’s upside down.
