Wait! What?

No chestnuts roasting on an open fire?

No Jack Frost nipping at your nose??

An Post writes:

Our An Post Christmas TV advert is about how we remember family and friends at Christmas. It highlights the fact that when we make the effort to write and post our Christmas cards, the emotional rewards for both sender and receiver are enormous.

The TV advert features the song ‘The Christmas Waltz’ and was shot in locations around Dublin and Wicklow.

The music track is called ‘The Christmas Waltz’, vocals by Lisa Hannigan and is available to purchase on Bandcamp. All profits raised from the sale of the track will go directly to Simon Community to help tackle homelessness in Ireland.

Now, giant Anglo-Saxon supermarket chains, that’s how you do a Christmas ad.

I never understand why state monopolies bother wasting money advertising. An Post advertising makes as much sense as the Telecom Eireann ads when there was only one phone company, or even worse the ESB ads back when there was only one electricity company. Tugging at our heartstrings with Dusty Springfield crooning her melancholic wistful ballads about the good old days to invoke us to turn on the immersion on ‘bath’ and switch on every light and fan heater in the house just in case wee Jimmy comes back from America with a large bag of Hershey Kisses and a copy of Playboy wrapped inside the latest issue of Cara magazine he stole off the plane.

Yes. Why do An Post need to make “our … Christmas TV advert”? Anyone got an informed guess at the budget for this one? 80 grand? More? Plus the singer’s fee? This is probably simplistic, but perhaps An Post’s money would be better spent keeping one of them there rural post offices open…

plus another €27k for a 30 second ad if it’s shown during the Toy Show tomorrow night, which I’m sure it will be.

I don’t think this one’s complicated. People don’t need to send christmas cards, letters or anything else. An Post might have a state monopoly but their competition is not other post carriers. It’s mobile phones and Facebook and emails. And that’s very serious competition, if you compare volume of personal letters to past decades. An Post are trying to remind people to send them at all.

Maybe Christmas is when An Post makes a big chunk of money, if people send cards?
(Just been looking at a hand-drawn Celtic-curlicue-y card from 1908 that a lonely emigrant painted and sent from New York to Cork…)

“This content is not available on this country domain.” All alone out foreign without even an An Post ad to warm me cockles.

I got this, but I was able to watch it when I clicked through to Youtube.

(Seems really strange to put regional restrictions on a video like this.)

Can people not see this as a beautifully made ad that promotes the fact that there is nothing as nice as getting a hand written card through the letterbox at Christmas? It’s very easy to send a group text on Christmas eve or put a status on Facebook wishing everyone a happy Christmas but it actually means nothing. And why would it be available overseas? It’s an Irish ad and would have Irish copyright restrictions!
