Clip Art Ad Drama

Harmless festive bus shelter ad for some.

Searing indictment of institutional indifference to decent design for others.

Fiacra Lennon fumes:

“Decision to not pay a decent Irish illustrator for this ad is very poor. Truly woeful ad…

Fight!

While I’m not going to enter the competition, the poster tells me all I need to know.

It’s far better than a Harvey Norman ad on the radio in terms of annoyance levels.

      I know, right?!

Am I supposed to be outraged that the illustrator wasn’t Irish, or wasn’t decent, or both? Ad looks fine to me.

Ah to be fair, all the designers commentating on this understand the ‘commercial v art’ conflict in their field, such as Jimmy below.

Rather, there’s a certain percentage of every part of society who feel they are owed a living/the government should do everything for them. Like recently, it seems that people can’t master the tricky act of turning off the tap to conserve water without a mass media campaign and funded night classes. Or need the government to tax soft drinks so they don’t get fat(ter), etc.

Do you have to be a decent irish illustrator to understand the issue here? I think you art/marketing lines may be blurring.

Bingo. Designers rarely have any creative control over the project, especially if its advertising. Some producer/exec always has to give the orders and we just press buttons and make the thing more thingy-er

Heres my rant, Do pay zone have a charge on using the service? I know all the Centras in my area now charge 50c for using the service when buying prepay gas or electric. Don’t know if parking or phone credit is the same. Nasty

          PEACEFUL PROTEST

I’m allowed to stand here ranting and raving and stopping traffic if I want.

Did anyone see the work i did for the new Parkingtag ad? I drew the…oh…(sobs quietly in the corner)

from the Ts & Cs on the competition site:
“The overall prize of a year’s free parking is limited to a maximum of €2000 Parking Tag credit”

so it’s not a year’s free parking, it’s €2000 free parking – yellow zones are €2.90 per hour, which would allow 690 hours parking – or less than two hours a day every day for a year.

Good work-searching illustrator sees crap ad, writes a tweet.
      Seems straightforward enough.
I agree that your post is mildly insane and will inform Fiachra if I see him.

Good work-searching illustrator sees ad they consider crap ad, writes a tweet without checking website to see simple figure in car character is lifted directly from “how it works” video on company’s site.

Even as a graphic designer/illustrator myself i can appreciate some companies aren’t really too concerned about having an aesthetically pleasing work of art, sometimes it’s just about throwing it out there as quickly and cheaply as possible. C’est la vie.

Presumably Fiacra would never, EVER apply to design for a company based in the UK or France, for example. As everyone knows those should only go to English or French designers who will design what THEY want, regardless of quality, cost, or the actual company’s preference.

wouldn’t it be nicer if Dublin City Council gave away a good bike and made a commitment to improve conditions for cyclists (or even a Dublin Bus pass) rather than encouraging more cars into the town?

The point is not that they didn’t hire someone Irish but that they didn’t hire someone to do a proper job. And of course people will say that nobody will notice or nobody makes buys something because of the quality of an illustration but it’s not actually true. Even if you are not knowledgeable about design these things still influence you subconsciously.

    1. Loony Loo

      Nothing.

Unless of course you are Fiachtra, then there is a huge problem, he didn’t get the gig.

So Irish Water drop 20k on an entire corporate identity it’s the end of the world but this drama queen is entitled to work all the same?
