Was there not some article in the IT where one of the journos who has moved there got a bill for over $400 for the first 3 months there? Water in California is expensive.
Lower taxes and bigger allowances mean you charge for services directly.
In Ireland, we have high taxes, mediocre services and now the government thinks it can charge separately and directly for water?!

Those are state taxes, add federal taxes to that.

And, in some cases, city income taxes, plus county property taxes.

deposit is $340, service charge $50, and usage roughly $260 and they have a swimming pool…
Rep
She said in the replies that the swimming pool was filled before they arrived so I would have presumed it was excluded. Regardless, it is for 1 month. That is a lot.
…and, still if my understanding of charges is correct, the USD260 usage charge pays for over 200k liters of water, or over half of what goes into a 25 meter pool (your typical local public swimming pool) http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2005/JeffreyGilbert.shtml

As a server on a J1 we had the option to charge a quarter for water if we wanted, and allowing for inflation over time that now equates to $274 per cup, more than my weekly pension. Not contribution. My actual pension. Well, maybe not that long ago, but I does seem like a while back.

Did you come saying things like side-walk and gas station after a few weeks in the states? Did you have a fake drawl up until about Christmas when the slagging from your mates made you cop on.

I can only imagine the abuse you’ll give me when you find out what I called things in Italy.

That’s nothing. Should have heard me when I got back from Oz.

I know! The notions some people get about saying things different than in ‘the parish’! Lunacy.
Cop on. You sound very bitter.

Thank Jehovah we don’t have droughts here and don’t have to pay on the double for water. Oh…wait a minute.
ahyeah
oohhhh, I love that “oh wait a minute” thing.

I see no problem with that, there’s element of service involved. Staff time cost money.

QUite frankly I’m more moved that you didn’t bother to tip…

The $0.00 in the tip column just means they don’t include a tip in the bill. They “suggest” a tip underneath. I’m sure Lorna tipped ’em handsomely.
Cambria is a lovely town, its where they filmed Arachnophobia.

Try Copenhagen. I seem to remember paying the equivalent of €4 for a jug of tap water. And I certainly wasn’t drunk at the time!

If they charge for water in California, then we should charge for water here. It’s a disgrace that we don’t.
ahyeah
Here here. Once again, it’s stupid little Paddy Irishman, last to the party. We should charge €1 per sip or €5 if you want to knock it back in one. That’ll teach them/us.

It was actually $703!
And only from Sept 15 to October 29.
Take a look at the 2014 tax rates and allowances in California.

If I read this right, the rate (consumption) part of the bill is about 1.1c per litre, about a quarter of what we will/might be paying.
Bare in mind that in the US they are not paying any of the costs through their taxes as we are.
Water is not a cheap business, specially in places with severe draughts. http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2014/01/look-shocking-picture-californias-drought
