I don’t know how the Irish media can report on live court cases like this. Very irresponsible.
I guess the huge pressure to sell dead trees trumps the reputation of the Irish media (not that there’s much of a reputation left). The newspaper hawkers of today are even prepared to run the risk of collapsing a trial.
So court cases should take place in secret?
Like confession?
Secret courts are common in Ireland.
Anyway, that’s another matter.
The issue is that journalists are not judges and it seems, from the above selection of headlines, that they need to be reminded of this. Journalism used to be a reputable profession.
The judge warned the jury at the start of the week that they would be hearing details which might be deeply upsetting. This is like catnip to the Irish press and they are re-reporting those details without limit and without warning. I bet the press is just upset that the victim wasn’t prettier, The Examiner stands out for its restraint in reporting the outline without wallowing in the tawdry details.
“She said ‘he ties me up and masturbates over me’. ”
reports the Irish Times. Just how this advances the story is beyond me, I can see how it is deeply upsetting to the families of the victim and the accused though. Well done IT.

At least RTE is warning its online readers “(Warning: This story contains information that may upset some readers)” but you’d still wonder how the reporting is expanding relevant knowledge whilst it pummels the crap out relatives and friends of the victim and accused.
That International New York Times one is dated December 17 2014.
Apologies, Cathal. Thanks. Fixed now.
That’s a weird photo on the Irish Times cover. Why so close like that?

Quimby: Keep digging. We’re bound to find something!
They do as Quimby suggests, until there are only a few of them at the
bottom of a hole forty or fifty feet deep.
Quimby: I guess we’re not going to find anything.
Otto: Um, how are we going to get out of here?
Homer: We’ll dig our way out!
Wiggum: No, dig _up_, stupid.
