You haven’t shown all the facts. If you have a minimum balance of €3,000 in your account then the quarterly charge is only €5 despite how many transactions you make. This has not changed.

don’t let the full truth get in the way of a click bait post
Small Wonder
So the poorest pay more. Like they aren’t suffering enough.

They? We. I ain’t got no fancy 3 grand lying around to ward off bank charges with!
Al
if you had 3 grand you wouldnt leave it in a non interest earning current account
Nikkeboentje
Have you any idea what the interest rates are at the moment. It is not worthwhile having a savings account, especially after DIRT.
well
An tips on alternatives to savings account that are more worthwhile?
Nikkeboentje
Well – It all depends on your risk profile. If you want something low risk that you can get access to your money fairly quickly, then Prize Bonds are a good call. The winnings are also tax free. I won €50 yesterday, which is loads more than the interest I would have earned if the money was in a bank account.

Whether or not you like it surely depends on what type of transaction charge you typically incur. 90%+ of my charges are in that second row in the table that are reducing in cost by 50% from 20c to 10c. Why should I not like this?

+1 on this one. This will make my banking far cheaper.

Yes but you are being charged for each of those transactions everytime, where as if you took 1 Cash transaction out and used the cash for 10 of those debit card transactions you would be winning. The onus here is to make taking cash out more expensive and push people into debit transactions. I would imagine they are trying to get more people to do debit card transactions thus equalising any supposed savings.
Nikkeboentje
You can do one debit card transaction in a shop and get cash back, saves you going to the ATM and suffering an additional charge.

Yeah cause it’s really easy to keep €3k balance in your current account.

They’re nasty. On principle I refuse to out my money in an Irish bank but seeing those fees would only help cement that opinion. PTSB stung two mates over xmas who accidentally over spent the balance of their current accounts. Luckily (they thought) the bank allowed the excess of €2:15 to go through. Oh the fee? A mere €12 ….. but only because the permission to allow this transaction go through was activated automatically because he was now a loyal customer ( he was with them a year and it said so on page 9, paragraph 17, sub section F of his T&Cs). Or theft as I like to call it.
Nikkeboentje
Bodger, you should at least put a link to the charges and the T&C’s so people can see the full facts. What you’re showing is misleading.

They’re all the same, just be a bit more savvy with who and how you bank. Permanent TSB is by far the best providing you lodge 1,500 euro per month to your account. I’ve been with them for years and never had any issues with them.

I think it’s great that people are defending banks. They’re only doing their very best for all of us, fupp the begrudgers.

Its almost, almost, as if they have staff in their brick and mortar shops they have to pay for working there, security companies that deliver cash to branches and ATMs to pay, IT systems such as Internet banking, in house accounts systems to keep up to date and secure. Machinery like ATMs, lodgement machines to upkeep. Plus insurance, ESB bills, and other day to day stuff.
Why can’t they do it for free????
Fatman Scooperman
Well you see transaction charges aren’t really where banks make their money. Higher charges on certain types of transactions has gone up, not to increase revenue but to discourage their use. For example going in to a branch and speaking to someone.

It’s almost, almost as if they have directors salaries to pay, Richie Boucher €843,000 , Andrew Keating €390,000, Archie Kane €490,000, Patrick O’Sullivan €126,000 etc..

I just wish they would pass on the European bank interest decrease to mortgage holders.

But is all seems extremely reasonable to me – moving people on from using expensive to handle paper money and cheques to cheap and quick digital methods. ATM’s cost money to stock up. Cheques require massive resources to clear. Contactless payments cost very little to deliver.
Why should I pay for luddites?
Banks are banks. They hold your money in a way that makes it accessible by way of a bit of plastic in your pocket and they charge for the service.
If you want free, use your sock drawer instead and try pushing a tenner in a usb slot next time you buy a book on amazon.
Anyway, those charges look like a reduction for me and I dont have 3k resting in my account
Cheers dude ! I do do that more than go to the ATM these days, go me !! :)

what exactly is a contactless card transaction?

When you can just ‘boop’ your card over the top of the wee card machine in shops without having to insert it or enter the pin. Takes a second or two and is only allowed on purchases up to 10 (possibly 15?) euro.

I don’t think this descended into the bunfight Broadsheet wanted.

In fairness, “New BOI Transaction Charging Regime Seems Entirely Reasonable” doesn’t really gel with the Broadsheet house style.

True, doesn’t look bad to me… which one covers paying with your debit card at the shops?
The charge which has been reduced by 50% from 20c to 10c. You should also get cash back at a shop as this will save you from the ATM charge.
