I recently bought a TV in a certain Australian owned Electronics store ( I have since found out that they tend to be the most expensive) and the guy was trying to sell me some overpriced monster HDMI cables. He was giving the usual spin, gold connectors, high bandwidth, better picture quality and he got on to how Sky sport will look so much better with these cables because you get the full HD experience. He was stumped when I told him Sky HD is 720p. And I said that since the signal is digital, the cables shouldn’t matter. I’ll stick to my perfectly fine “cheap” HDMI cables. Still, I reckon they catch a lot of people with this nonsense.

If you think water charges and austerity are cause for contentious arguments, you’ve seen nothing yet! Even Boards.ie had it locked down.

    Run for the hills!

I’m so glad I don’t even know what they’re for. That means I definitely won’t buy it.

yes but what you really need are “brilliant pebbles” to tie onto the cables (google them – they are little shiny stones and act as a “comprehensive system for tuning the room and audio system based on special physical properties of highly symmetrical crystal structures.”)

I heard that If you use one of these to connect your computer to your routernot only will your mp3’s sound better but it’ll spell check your email, put extra spite into your tweets and all your torrentz will download in “full 4k”. That’s worth $10,000 of anyone’s money.

Yes, that is the price. This company, Audioquest seems to specialise in extremely overpriced cables – they also do HDMI cables for similar prices.

The specs and the claims they make are completely ridiculous – not even pseudo science – just completely made up but they are very clever and going for a specific element of the market – the dumb-and rich-as-fuck segment who just go “give me the most expensive cable because it will obvoisly be the best”. This works in the custom install market where the arabs etc. just pay 500K to install their new home cinema and don’t care what the equipment in it is at all – as long as it’s the best.

The AV magazines, which survive on ad revenue, also have no problem taking full glossy back cover ads from Audioquest, and never show them up as chancers either…

p.s. there are some hilarious comments on Audioquests ebay ads for diamond HDMI cables saying what they did for buyers!

Anybody who spends big money on cables is being taken for a sucker.
A tech review I once read summed it up like this .
Buying expensive HDMI cables for your TV and expecting a better picture it like buying a fancy cable for your printer and expecting better print outs.
