Fine Gael junior minister Simon Harris TD

Further to this exchange on RTÉ’s Claire Byrne Live last week.

They choo choose him…

[Simon Harris] is still only 28 but his command of the facts and the aplomb with which he dished out some devastating put-downs showed why some of his colleagues have dubbed him “the white Obama”.

Biteback time: Simon Harris v Eamon Dunphy, Alan Kelly v Peter McVerry (Stephen Collins, Irish Times)

But while he [Simon Harris] is the maestro of the new non-confrontational school of politics that sucks the air out of every conflict he has a steel trap mind, as Dunphy found to his cost.

When Simon met Dunphy, a new generation took over (John Drennan, Independent.ie)

DelGirl writes:

Delusional even by the standards of the Irish pol corr tradition….. I watched Simon Harris [on Claire Byrne Live ] and the only impression he conveyed was a smarmy and nasty one (and I’m no Dunphy fan). This young man’s life experience is as narrow as his shirt collar and it shows. Oh and can I be the new Hillary? We have the same hair colour!

FIGHT!

Hilarious! The PR companies are earning their money in these newspaper comment pieces. Sadly for them all you have to do is look at the video or read the transcript to see how utterly odious and useless he came across.

I think Eamonn Dunphy is a tiresome dose even if a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Harris could well be Taoiseach soon enough though – the bar isn’t very high as the recent officeholders display.

…the upcoming referendums will also ask if the voting age to run for president should be reduced from 35 to 21…be careful what you wish for.

  4. Panty Christ

Harris saved up his communion money and put it towards his campaign to become a TD. A watery figure.

I had the misfortune to watch part of that show. I thought Simon Harris was a particularly virulent strain of the young politicians Fine Gael send out to spew their agenda. He was a vile automaton. I don’t usually watch these shows because of my delicate nature, but he was so brutal I was amazed that Claire Byrne didn’t stop him. Oh were I not so old and poor that I could emigrate to Canada.

I don’t think Messrs. Collins and Drennan watched the same programme as I did! Simon Harris is an appalling creature. More nasal than a rhinoplasty clinic, more slime than Slimer and about as charismatic as a lamp post. He is a bitchy Eoin McLove.

  7. Soundings

Highly articulate, fast-talking, well-presented and young politician. Top class begrudging bait!

Having said that, and notwithstanding his fairly recent elevation to the role of junior finance minister, can anyone point to any solid achievement, apart from his own promotion. Has he championed any cause, local or national? Is he responsible for any new government policy or decision? Has he at least managed to get some auld wan her medical card back.

    1. More_Bemuda_Than_Berlin

No, no, no, and no again. This fella wants to climb a slippery pole, so he can’t afford to make any sort of impression with policy ideas or the like.

They’d only come back to bite him maybe at a later stage – better to go through the motions, keep his nose clean, and bide his time.

This is exactly the game plan that Enda and Bertie used to get to the top.

so if you’re articulate with facts you’re labeled as smug

you can’t win. Dunphy had his as$ handed to him in this “debate” – all over the shop; incomplete facts and utterly confused.

      1. My Daddy is bigger than Yours

        Get a life you gimp.

Dunphy is a numpty who spent years on The Last Word brown-nosing Charlie McCreevy and Bertie. Anyone who critiqued the Celtic Tiger was dismissed in vulgar and aggressive manner.

Utterly biased in favour of FF. Used to go on about Boston vs Berlin (remember that) and Dunphy was totally Boston. He used to slag off Clinton because Clinton was too liberal for him. Fact

          1. My Daddy is bigger than Yours

wait; I’ve just explained how Eamon is not the progressive luvvie you think he is and you’re too think to realise you shouldn’t be cheering for him?

    1. My Daddy is bigger than Yours

      >odious, petulant little spoilt brat.

Because he had facts and the guts to use them? Weird comment. Odious? You seem to have a lot of hate inside you.

Do you find it so odious that he gave as good as he got in a robust debate? and won the argument against a washed up footballer with notions of being some sort of intellectual?

      1. Digs

In fairness, it’s a well established fact that Harris is in fact odious. I met someone recently who was in 4th class with him. With the exception of Sean in the front seat, the whole class and his teacher found him to be disconcertingly odious!

      2. italia'90

        >because he had facts and the guts to use them?
He’s about as factual and gutsy as Dick Roche!
In fact, if Roche ran a school for smarmy, craven, forelock tugging cretins,
young Harris would graduate with flying honours.
I hope they have a wonderful career together in Europe working for the banks.

Btw winning a faux intellectual argument against a washed up ex footballer
isn’t much to brag about, now is it?

People give out enough about underqualified TDs who’re ex- teachers/publicans – but at least they went to college, or had to run a business etc. So had done something pre-politics.

I don’t know how anyone can vote for Harris, someone who’s done nothing with their life but be a politician. How can someone whos never had a real job, or been to college, or traveled, or anything really…have enough life experience to make decisions on running a country?

    1. My Daddy is bigger than Yours

Maybe you could stand yourself? if the standard is so low you should have no trouble.

      >I don’t know how anyone can vote for Harris, someone who’s done nothing with their life but be a politician.

You can’t even write a simple sentence explaining your rational. Their is plural. His is singular

      1. Zaccone

An iPhone’s Autocorrect can make fools of us all! But my point stands. He’s a solely career politician, with every negative that implies.

I’m not a TD, or running for election, so I’m not really comparable to Simon Harris thankfully. If you want a comparison however then you need to look no further than to his constituency neighbour Stephen Donnelly. Compare the respective CVs of Harris vs Donnelly…

        1. Mayor Quimby

What’s your point? Donnelly is the only one in the Dail with that kind of a CV.

Doesn’t stop him being a complete snake. He’ll still take populist positions when he clearly knows them to be incorrect

      2. f_lawless

“You can’t even write a simple sentence explaining your rational. Their is plural. His is singular”
Deary me.. Grammar put down fail.
It’s perfectly acceptable to use “their” with an antecedent of indeterminate gender such as “someone” and has been done so for centuries. Are you dismissing writers such Shakespeare, Chaucer, Bernard Shaw, Austen, etc ?
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they

        1. Mayor Quimby

          > Are you dismissing writers such Shakespeare, Chaucer, Bernard Shaw, Austen, etc ?

talk about bringing out the big guns and having them blow up in your face! The subject was clearly male and singular; therefore **his** was the correct pronoun.

          1. f_lawless

heheh nice try.. the clause used was “.., someone who’s done nothing with their life but be a politician.”. “Their” is clearly referring back to “someone” (a word obviously of indeterminate gender) in said clause hence the acceptability .
Allow me to quote Jane Austen from Mansfield Park:
“Poor Julia, the only one out of the nine not tolerably satisfied with their lot…”
“Their” is this case is referring back “the only one” at the start of the clause even though we know Julia is the subject.
..And, that’s all the schooling I’m prepared to do for today!

  10. Frilly Keane

I’m gonna love watching this one fall apart

And then get a gig in IW

    Then resign

Then move to Florida and sell retirement homes

  11. AG

“This young man’s life experience is as narrow as his shirt collar and it shows.”
I.e. young people should have no say in running the country because they haven’t ‘life experience’.

  12. Optimus Grime

Oh I really don’t like Harris! Having not come across him before he has the bang of someone who hides behind committees, task forces and reports and not actually stand for anything. Yes he is articulate but how you sling poo at people does not excuse that you do! He reminds me of the Queen’s corgis, a little preening yappy dog that could do with a swift kick up the bottom.
Now where is “My Daddy is bigger than Yours” to defend him on that point

  13. Drogg

I am no fan of dunphy neither but I felt he put Harris and his snide personal remarks in their place. If he is the future of FG we better hope they are put out of power very soon.
