This afternoon.

At the Criminal Courts of Justice, Dublin

Leah writes:

Members of the Photocall Ireland photo agency attend a hearing against protestor Steven Bennet, who was charged with damaging property at the Department of Justice during a protest in relation to the penalty points issue.

Eamon has objected publicly to Gardai demanding access to the images on photojournalists Sasko Lazarov’s digital notebook to use as evidence against the defendant. Representatives of the National Union of Journalists supporting Photocall Ireland were also in Court.

More as we get it.

  1. Mr. T.

It’ll be today’s younger generation who willingly give away free speech, personal privacy and the right to protest in our time.

Stupid self obsessed little t***s who think they’re rebellious and alternative just because they wear something they found in a bin and bang on about fair trade coffee.

The last real youth agitator movement was in the 80s. Nothing but sheltered weak-willed posh kids ever since.

I’m sorry but they took photos of a Garda being injured and criminal damage being done, AS IT HAPPENED.
How could they not expect to be witnesses??

but they’re not being asked to be witnesses, are they? Isn’t it that the gardai want the photos to use as evidence and that’s it?

      it’s not the same thing.

If it was your old lady being raped and they happened to be there, I’m sure you’d see it as the same thing.

I really have no idea what the problem is here. As long as the warrants are in order, then where’s the problem?

      2. Menace

If their photos are being used as evidence they’ll also be required as witnesses to verify when and where the photos were taken as well as that they in fact, took them.

Sasko must be the most prolific snapper in Ireland, there was a point when I wasn’t sure if it was a person or an agency.

why do they need all that 3rd party evidence to convict the likes of steven bennett? that lad is plain sloppy, as protesters go – overly visible, lippy, shouty and aggressive. there’s tonnes of footage of him online already and i’d say the gardai have a dossier on him as big as greek chequebook.

  5. The Bird in the Box

these are the same lads who take pictures of witnesses coming out the CCJ each day. they don’t appear to have any respect for the privacy of these people so I’m limited in my sympathy for them.
