Blackly comedic, defiant price gouging.

Charleville Lodge Hotel (Facebook)

Thanks Niall O’Keeffe

Update:

charleville

Meanwhile…

back in February 5…

A hotel in Dublin’s north city, the Charleville Lodge, has advertised a campaign on its Facebook page, offering guests 50% off their room bill if they turn up with their Water Charges Application Form in the shape of a paper airplane.

….Just as interestingly, the Charleville seems like it’s not averse to wringing every last cent it can out of the public when it suits their own requirements. Consider the fact that a double room this summer is currently priced at €118, except on the night of Saturday 20th June, when the price curiously shoots up to €227. How could this be?

Well, just like every hotel within a 5-mile radius of Croke Park, it celebrates the announcement of a concert in Croke Park by doubling its prices, and with The Script playing Croker that night, they know that the average punter will have no choice but to fork out for a room as the gigs don’t finish much before 11pm.

And with the imminent announcement of two Bruce Springsteen concerts in the same venue this summer, the Charleville Lodge is no doubt licking its lips at the chance to fleece the ordinary people of Ireland, about whom it cares so much, once again.

Just like so many hotels in Dublin city centre, its message is quite clear. It’s not OK to rip off the public, unless its them doing the ripping-off…

Hotel hikes its prices for Croker gig … it’s a script that’s sadly predictable (Michael O’Doherty, Herald)

I hope no one damages the toilets in this fine establishment. Accidentally on purpose or otherwise.

  2. jonotti

He’s dead right. People losing their mind over basic supply and demand. Willthey be giving out stink when the hotel is forced to sell its rooms at a loss which happens for large parts of the year?

    1. Mikeyfex

That’s exactly where you get these things wrong. Yes people whinging is tiresome but as a business owner or representative you address them without insulting people and you will come out on top. Say all that sh!t under your breath then as much as you like.

      1. linbinius

Can we not just ignore Jonotti or people clearly trying to double the comment section figures? Not trying to pick on you Mickeyflex but we are all aware the person is here to troll. Let them do their thing but not interact directly. Might get tired of it if they don’t get the reaction.

        1. Mikeyfex

I dunno is he. Offers a different opinion in curt way is all. Shur I half agree with him a quarter of the time. I think he may be Tommy from the olden days of BS.

          1. Spartacus

“I half agree with him a quarter of the time”

            Hmmmm…

            SQRT((0.5*0.5)+(0.25*0.25))=0.559016994375

            Call it 0.6%

            Sounds like Labour’s position atm.

          2. jonotti

I don’t think Tommy was despised to the same extent. But you’re right that 90% of my opinions are genuine. I’ve lots of opinions that would be part of a consensus but I don’t post them so you only see the contrarian side.

          3. Linbinius

Mikeyflex, I’m with you on agreeing (kinda) with his opinions now and again but I think that is because we are both willing to think about things objectively and are willing to change our view if someone has a valid and construct angle on an issue.

As far as I can see jonoti (insert alias) is just taking the piss.

Funny sometimes but only as far as a clown is when he falls due to his oversized shoes.

          4. rotide

I feel your pain regarding not bothering posting opinions that are in agreement Jonotti. There’s enough choir here for 2 cathedrals and no need for any more preaching.

          5. bob

Aghhh Spartacus. I know I shouldn’t bite, but your maths are hurting me.

Where are you getting square roots from? Just 0.5 * 0.25 = 12.5%

            Ahh, that’s better…

          1. Spartacus

Why are you weaving dried plant stems into humanoid effigies?

So many questions, so little universe.

Don’t do that. Don’t use that term in a way that can be taken as an insult. Don’t do an internet diagnosis of someone’s mental state and then dismiss them by cataloguing them with a relatively common condition as if it explains/excuses/makes irrelevant their behaviour. It doesn’t matter if jonotti is or isn’t. You knowing whether he is or he isn’t makes no difference, no more than if you were left handed or I have depression. jonotti posts opinions you find disagreeable and generally finds the people who argue with him unpersuasive. That doesn’t make him autistic. He gets a heck of a lot of insults. Perhaps that is something he does have in common with people with autism. Think about that, please.

        1. Joe the Lion

If that’s addressed to me Nigel and while it wasn’t a clinical diagnosis as I wouldn’t be qualified, he exhibits a lot of the traits of autistic folks in his posts, so it wasn’t intended as an insult either. In other words you’re reading stuff into it that wasn’t there. I don’t find jonotti’s posts particularly disagreeable actually, I note that there is a pattern of contrived disagreeability however.

          1. Nigel

That’s why I said ‘taken as an insult.’ With all the insults flying at jonotti, this just becomes part of the noise. At best it comes across as a put-down, and if that wasn’t your intent, then it’s unfortunate, but inevitable if people are going to use complex real-life conditions as shorthand to explain certain types of behaviour which may only be superficially related. Even though this annoys me I’d normally hesitate to remark on it, but you’re usually better than this, which is how I know you weren’t intending it as an insult.

Right. Cost per double room on a comparable weekend (here, one night – 3rd July 2015) is €98. That’s a 2.5x price increase and that, ladies and gentlemen, is not a lesson in supply and demand but rather the proprietors taking advantage / the piss.

    1. Eliot Rosewater

It is supply and demand, though. There will be a huge demand for accommodation on the nights that Sheeran is playing, and a very strictly limited supply. Hotels determine what people will pay (and they will pay). That’s how it works.

The strategy of the hotel regarding their Facebook updates leaves a lot to be desired, however. I think they should probably be thinking more about the long term interests of their business than a very short-sighted marketing ‘strategy’. They may get the attention in the short term, but people will remember them when times aren’t so plush for the hotel industry.

      1. Bobby Rwanda

I am well aware of the mechanics of basic supply and demand, Eliot. However, we do not adhere to the strict laws of economics. That’s why there is taxation, social provision etc. A similar situation will in all likelihood arise with tickets to this gig. Just because demand far outweighs demand, it does not justify charging a multiple of the face value or market price of the ticket. Even Ryanair don’t go into this deep territory with high-demand weekends for rugby or whatever.

        1. My Left Testicle

          Well said Bobby..

The problem the hotel industry has has a lot more to do with image than they might imagine.
This sort of arrogance is very misplaced.

          [Sorry. I can’t think of a joke.]

        2. rotide

I’m sorry, but what ryanair do you fly? They most certainly do raise prices at certain times.

The guy is an arse of the highest order with those facebook posts, but unfortunatly that’s the way it goes with prices. Try booking a hotel in tralee around rose time its the same thing.

    1. ABM's Bloodied Underwear

He seems to always look like that. Plus, what he’s seeing is worrying or perplexing him ever so slightly.

  4. Paulus

My sense of outrage is tempered somewhat back the lack of a piece of information.
Did they boot a cheaper advance booking or look to change an agreed price after the announcement?
I seem to recall mention of at least of one of the chain multiples doing so in advance of the last gig to hit Croke park, and that would irk me more than someone hiking the asking price for unsold rooms.

  5. My Left Testicle

    €279 for a double-room, in Grangegorman of all places…eh…

There’s a joke in there somewhere but I’m not going to be one to make it.

  6. Soundings

    Scalping. Nothing more, nothing less.

And the next time the hotel industry tries to appeal to our patriotic spirit and holiday at home and support Ireland, they can f*pp right off and die.

    1. Royal M

+1 for Kieran. The customer is always right, unless they’re dirty, grimy peasants who don’t know how much of a big deal Ed Sheeran is and how all prices within a 100km radius of Dublin should automatically skyrocket when he decides to come here.

  7. Jimmy 2 tones

Ill make sure to never stay in that place now, thats for sure anyway. Cant stand the arrogance of the owner. No interest in ed sheerin either.

    1. My Left Testicle

      I read your name.and I think you’re into Bowie.

BDSM is cool and fashionable these days.
      I rest my case.

          1. Joe the Lion

I’m sure that was the point Mr Left Testicle. It was all improvised even the lyrics at the mic as he was recording them. Sure we are all Dogs pups.

  8. Sheila

Regardless of supply and demand (they can charge what they want and they will), but the guys attitude stinks.

Not that it makes much difference, but I’d not stay there and I’d not recommend it to anyone.

  9. lordwilmore

    Question re supply and demand.
During the gigs there will be a higher demand on taxis I’d imagine. Are taxi drivers allowed to up their rates? Ditto pubs and restaurants in the vicinity.. more foot traffic.
Why is the hotel industry allowed to change it’s prices willy nilly? I can’t think of any other business group that does this…..except ryanair I guess. But they take me places far away….

    1. spork

taxi fares are regulated. the meter is the MAXIMUM you can be charged (the driver is free to charge less if he wants). Hotel rooms are also regulated in a sense. you will find the maximum you can be charged posted somewhere in the room (it may be on the back of a wardrobe door)… however, this rate is set by the hotel themselves.
it’s surprising you can’t think of any other business that follow the same demand led model. try renting a car in the summer v winter, or booking a holiday rental, or travelling by train, or having an early bird v normal dinner. it’s simple economics.
it would be stupid NOT to change the rates when you have a product/service in high demand, just as the rates are adjusted downwards off season. although, as most people have said, there are probably better ways of getting the message across.

      1. Stewart Curry

Or try buying/booking anything and then sticking the word ‘wedding’ in front of it and see how much the price changes.

  10. Christopher

Why do you keep giving free publicity to this hotel?? He specializes in online trolling to get people to his site and you fall for it again and again- hes a horrible person! See his scam on the “German” tourist review, on the “Garth Brooks is back on!” shite and his frankly crass posting of the picture of Mohammed during the Charlie Hebdo thing. Well done on validating his horrible nasty online marketing.

    1. Frilly Keane

There is sum’ting very unusual about their business approach alright.

Just a dash thru the numbers

Say they trap annuder 150 per person per night over the two nights.

Say that’s thirty guests per night

      That’s €150 x 30 x 2
      That’s a 9 grand boost.

      But the future income lost?

      Easily 100k

      Ara’ layve them at it

IMO. Too thick to be taken seriously.

      1. Sadface

The Proprieter doesnt seem to understand how Google search works..
This will lose him future business, but as he says, they use this to filter out guests that might not be into “having the craic”..

  11. scottser

i was quite miffed at the misrepresentation of 3 homeless service providers to make a p1ss-taking point about free accommodation and the justification of their own. it’s disrespectful to the organisations and to homeless persons who rely on this accommodation.

  12. Paolo

The people on here giving out about the price increase are morons. Whomever wants a product or service will offer as much as they are willing to pay. NOBODY is forcing you to stay in the Charleville Lodge Hotel on the night a talentless muppet plays his saccharine, whiney odes to thousands of desperate singles.
