Creating The ‘Illusion of Responsibility’

Counter productive.

Or counter intuitive?

YOU decide.

Judith Goldberger writes:

So Fergus Finlay admits the billboards for his Diageo funded ‘Out Of Control Drinking’ campaign were created by UK based Goddard Global, the same guys who lobby for the tobacco industry. Nice industry to be hanging out with given they are threatening to sue the Irish government.

Then again, maybe they’re the right people to be hanging with as after all the tobacco industry know all about designing intentionally ineffective adverts which create the illusion of responsibility but are either counter-productive or go towards actually promoting their product.

Fight!

I don’t smoke, yet I hope the government lose any case brought against them. Plain packaging is most ridiculous thing iv heard. Why is it always alcohol and tobacco they go after. And don’t start with the health angle. The tax intake on tobbaco alone well covers it’d negative health costs.

Its not an angle, they are ridiculously bad for you.

What, the tax covering costs? That all depends what you count as costs, doesn’t it? And how exactly you measure smoking related disease, which can be tricky.

There is little doubt that the tax paid covers smoking-related health costs. Tricky or not, numerous studies in different western countries ave shown this. Partly this is because smokers die younger and the state doesn’t have to pickup the tab for looking after them into old age.

Fairly brutal logic but logic nonetheless.

Tobacco of course is bad, so why not make it illegal, Oh yeah its because the government LOVE the tax from it. Alcohol is no way bad for you. Abusing alcohol is bad. The vast majority of people don’t abuse it. What’s the logical reason for 10pm closing of the off licence.

Hear, hear.I don’t get that one at all. Issue proper ID cards and enforce the law – not make the buying of alcohol unlawful for everyone. There must be loads of people who work late and fancy a beer or a wine with their supper and are disallowed this small pleasure. Ridiculous.

Alcohol is not that bad for you if you stick within your daily limits but realistically, people don’t. People also binge drink, which is also bad for you.

It is hilarious though that a company can take a country to court over it’s own laws.

It would be much more scary if companies couldn’t take a govt to court to challenge their laws.

If you check the evidence you’ll see plain packaging does work. You don’t seem big on facts because the taxes don’t cover the cost to the health system and a majority of those who drink in Ireland do so in a way that is harmful to their health. But hey don’t let pesky old facts get in the way of a pointless rant

…why is the moral high ground populated exclusively with people so bereft of morals…

  3. Clampers Outside!

Fergus Finlay appears to be creating… The ‘Illusion of Credibility’ for this campaign, but all he’s doing is ruining any credibility I had in the man. My tuppence.

Diageo:….If only we could find a soft-spoken avuncular Charity boss who has the ruthless PR nous of a seasoned political PR hack

Calling it “OUT-OF-CONTROL” drinking is clever for starters as so few people will ever self-identify this way

    1. Lilly

Exactly. Even someone who hits the vodka at breakfast thinks they are in control because it’s just a pick-me-up with the OJ and they won’t touch it again ’til evening.

  5. Truth in the News

Diageo paying for the campaign and Fergus Finlay fronting it
is somewhat Grotesque,Unprecedented, Bizzare and Unbelievable.
