Sober in Sandymount writes:

Tesco in Sandymountis  suspending sale of alcohol from 4 – 7.30pm (I think) tonight due to the football match. Heard all off-licenses have been asked to do the same by the guards in the Irishtown/Ringsend/Sandymount/Donnybrook areas. Is there a precedent for this?

Anyone?

The broadsheet comments section attracts knackers? Clearly it doesn’t as nearly every person here appears to be college educated professionals.

Oh, and that should be “nearly every commenter appears to be a college educated professional”

Hey, hey, I may be ugly and hate-filled, but I… um, what was the third thing you said?

the fans of the oval ball are not nackers….. but they enjoy and auld head kicking on occasion.

Yeah…. A roundup ball, jumpers for goalposts, tightly whites for shorts and a field to kick it all about on…. Football….

Yep interesting but they should Do it when there is a rugby Match on too. I would say the vintners Are behind it

Suspend sales of loudmouth soup such as the brands pictured. Maintain sales of low volume craft beers. No inconvenience to law-abiding water charge paying dutiful citizenry.
    Simples!

Munki, if I could convey an ironic tone I would; I was just developing the post by trying to ridicule the measure by taking it a step further, I understand it’s hard to perceive without inflection or tone of voice. And many craft beers come in cans now.

so If I wanted to buy a bottle of wine to go with my dinner, and popped own to Tesco at 6pm, I couldn’t because there’s a football match on?

    ridiculous.

Just ban everything, Ireland, and be done with it.

While I can understand where they are coming from, this is an example of everything that’s wrong with Ireland. Gardaí who don’t have the resources to properly police a major event need to bring in Orwellian measures to prevent a public who have such little regard for their own health or society from getting themselves completely screw ball drunk and wrecking the place. Arguable if locals will be happy with the fact they won’t be able to get a few drinks to enjoy the match with close to the game or if they’ll be happier the streets aren’t flooded with piss and blood. Pathetic all round.

A little bit of idle hyperbole does no harm, I suppose.

“…..this is an example of everything that’s wrong with Ireland.” What a load of aul poo.

I wouldn’t want to be the poor twenty year old earning the minimum wage on a Sunday evening shift who has to tell the rowdier element that they can’t buy beer because the association football is on. Not only is it refusing them alcohol; the explanation is that it’s because they’re irresponsible louts.

    1. Medium Sized C

The only poor twenty year olds would have been in O’Briens.
They won’t get 3 hours wages. I feel bad for them.
It was closed. Shuttered. As was the off-licence in Tesco.

I should be noted that you really don’t see the rowdier element around Sandymount before football matches.
You see a few groups around one or two of the pubs, but I have never seen people flooding the off-licences before football matches. Don’t know why this was done.

I have no idea why this happened

  6. JollyRoger

Happens all the time. They don’t have to stop sales. Just the Garda are asking them to do it. Happens on paddys day every year all along the parade route.
