‘It’s Just About Love’

A mural by Joe Caslin of two men on the corner of Dame Street and George Street, Dublin which appeared over the weekend

Another mural of two women will be installed at another location later this week.

The Herald reports:

It is based on the famous National Gallery painting The Meeting on the Turret Stairs about a princess and her bodyguard who fall in love but aren’t allowed to marry.

“Here we are 1,000 years later and we’re still talking about a higher power who can prevent that union taking place and that’s the core thing – it’s just about love,” Joe said.

I hope giant mural of two men will further gay marriage debate, says artist (The Herald)

Some fine gable art in the city over the past few months.
Wasn’t this one defaced in some way over the weekend – anyone?

    1. Andrew

Didn’t hear anything but there was a yellow splash of paint (or mustard from Rick’s maybe) on it yesterday. Pretty small though, you might not even notice.

    2. ABM

How can that be classified as “art”? Because it’s big, intrusive and gay it’s now Ireland’s Mona Lisa?

      1. Spaghetti Hoop

        1. Big: yes it is. About as big as the one of Phil Chevron and the one of Heaney’s quote. They are all wall murals and are considered ‘art’.
        2. Intrusive: is it? It’s not in anyone’s way nor is it intruding into anyone’s life. If anything it is an improvement on a dull gable wall.
        3. Gay: depicts two males embracing, yes, but in the context of our time and the upcoming Marriage Referendum, it depicts two men as a loving couple.

Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was neither big nor intrusive. What it portrays still have art critics pondering.

        Your point, ABM?

      2. Parky Mark

It may come as a shock but not all art in the Mona Lisa. It would be pretty boring if that was the case.

  2. donkey_kong

it’s also about forcing that love onto people who don’t approve , tut tut or could give a hoot about others love.
Love thy gay or be damned to connacht

    1. Jordofthejungle

Lol – “forcing that love onto people who don’t approve”. What – by forcing them into the bedroom of gay couples? Let me assure you that the disapproval brigade will still retain the right to disapprove, tut-tut and obsess even after marriage equality.

Come the 23rd, you’ll just be walking down the street minding you’re own business, when suddenly, a hot pink van pulls up and a bunch of men wearing feather boas and hot pants, with disco music blaring and muscles glistening in the sun, forces you inside and into marrying one of them.

And just want until the lesbians get ya….

          1. Don Pidgeoni

I’m so sad about that. Except I’m not because I have the gay glitter-disco marriage van!! So long sucker!

      1. 15 cents

nah .. extra hallmark cards. theyll need to make more for gay marriage, theyll be coinin it in.. if they sell them in daintree

    1. Jane

Good old “just sayin'”. The universal invitation from unpleasant people to ignore everything they are just saying.

  3. ABM

Not only poor quality “art” (the audacity of lending an accomplished artist’s name and trying to associate their agenda with national entities), it’s also quite unsettling to have this visual propaganda forced down your throat. Thankfully I steer well clear of said area. I would very much not like to be seen/photographed anywhere near the purple place. Right-on creepiness dressed up as art knows no bounds. And why is the gay movement so Dublin-centric? No gays or whatever in Mayo?

    1. Andrew

Oh yes how awful that some people have to visit Dame Street, the centre of immorality! And imagine being PHOTOGRAPHED!
Of course there are gays in Mayo but this is the largest city in Ireland, the seat of media, corporations and politics, this is obviously where such a mural would be placed. Feel free to organise one for Castlebar!

      1. ABM

Go and tell the gays in Caslebar how downtrodden they are then. I suspect you’d be wasting your time and you’d get zero reception for your metrosexual anti-family ambitions. Best preach to the already corrupted eh?

        1. Jordofthejungle

Metrosexual anti-family ambitions. A little too much from ABM, the sexually dysfunctional, ironically anti-family loner and troll. Love it.

        2. Man in Mayo

I work in Castlebar, and I’m posting this message to you right now from Castlebar: Take your snotty attitude and shove it. I’m a straight Catholic born, bred and working in Mayo and I’ll be voting yes. I have gay and lesbians friends here who were born and bred in Mayo, who’ll also be voting yes. Just because we’re rural don’t assume our values are the same as yours.

Us culchies will be proudly voting yes as much as any one up in Dublin.

          “Already corrupted”…Yarra, g’way from me.

          1. Jordofthejungle

+1 There is of course an irony and hypocrisy to ABM’s musings. He is that which he hates.

    2. Jordofthejungle

Steer-clear of the area! No shit Sherlock. We will leave you to the “bliss” of your semi-rural tumbledown tumbleweed existence mired by social and sexual dysfunction. What adult male obsessed in the way you do about sex ABM yet on a practical level you admit to not having much experience.

    3. Jordofthejungle

“I would like not to be seen anywhere near the purple palace” – because your reputation as the town closet-case would be ruined ABM?

Once again, I ask you ABM what psychologically healthy adult male talks likes this?

Thankfully, no one has access to your internet browsing history – lol ( but also YIKES!)

    4. Jimmy

You should probably start putting inverted commas around “gay” as well as “art” to reinforce your disapproval.

    5. Gers

Didnt read all the replies but bet you its a deluge of abuse and other lovely tolerant messages … I too would not consider this as Art, its also too big and intrusive. Seems a lot on the Yes side (side which I am part of by the way) are forgetting the freedom of speech, tolerance, etc .. you are with LGBT or a full bigot, nice shortcuts guys :/

      1. Jordofthejungle

Yes dear, you’re a Yes voter and not a pretend Yes voter studiously agreeing with every crazy No campaign utterance. Go on out of that – not buying it.

      2. d4n

I find it weird when people try to claim that being against equality and being a bigot are different.

        1. Jordofthejungle

This is just the latest tactic from No interest obsessive keyboard warriors. Pretend to be a Yes voter but then agree with every utterance from the No side. Good few already rooted out on twitter.

        2. Gers

This is not about equality imo. In fact a good argument was made recently, post Yes vote the new inequality will be on the Hetero side. LGBT will have 2 ways to united while Hetero just one. But whatever, I have no issues either way and I am for Pro-choice so will be voting Yes. Doesnt mean I have to agree with every silly campaign LGBT or others are organising nor does it mean I will jump at the throat at everyone opposing it. Like someone said up in the comments this is a fundamental change in society and for some, its a huge deal.

          1. Jordofthejungle

I’m not buying it. Either you are unfamiliar with obsessive and abusive ABM or some weird proxy account.

          2. Nially

Opposite-sex couples can avail of civil partnerships too. Unless by “two ways to be united” you’re referring to conjugal matters, in which case yup, we’re still gonna beat you for variety there (sorry-not-sorry)

      3. Derval

        @Gers
“Seems a lot on the Yes side (side which I am part of by the way) are forgetting the freedom of speech, tolerance, etc”

Let’s kill this stupid argument once and for all.
        http://www.mediaite.com/tv/santorum-should-printers-be-forced-to-make-god-hates-fags-signs-for-westboro/
“Tolerance is a two-way street,” Santorum continued. “If you own a print shop and you are a gay man, should you be forced to print ‘God Hates Fags’ for the Westboro Baptist Church? Should the government force you to do that? That’s what these cases are all about. …This is where I think we just need some space to say, let’s have some tolerance.”

No the printer shouldn’t have to print something which is an incitement to hatred towards innocent people.
There is no correlation between this and a cake shop printing “Paul loves David” on a cake – which is an expression of love between two people.
        TOTALLY DIFFERENT

    6. Annie

Has it dawned on anyone that this appears to be trolltastic fake ABM posting for the lols? I do think this version of ABM is very much on the Yes side doing his best at playing the Pied Piper of Broadsheet. Here’s a hint: ABM is claiming to be afraid to go near the George – doesn’t that tell you this ABM is obviously lampooning the No brigade? You lot are too easy!

  4. Just sayin'

Der, what did Darwin say about species with declining birth rates that encourage gay marriage? How well does that work out?!

    (Calm down, I’m being flippant.)

      1. Jordofthejungle

Lol – were you not vaunting your “celibate” status last year ABM – waiting for the right “woman” (wouldn’t put money on that!) of impeccable virtue to come along?

I’m not sure reproduction is in God’s plan for you either ABM. Sort of an involuntary celibate aren’t you?

        Diddums…

  5. Mikeyfex

Just wondering why the hair is always just an outline when the rest is photo-real in all his installations. For ages I thought the ones in town (Limerick) were unfinished. Big Sisqo fan?

    1. Jordofthejungle

And those abused by the Roman Church and/or forcibly adopted or buried without even the merest hint of dignity or respect.
