You’ll recall how, in January, Central Bank governor Professor Patrick Honohan told the banking inquiry that the late Brian Lenihan, then finance minister, was overruled by a senior politician on the night of the bank guarantee in September 2008.
He said he understood Mr Lenihan thought that Irish Nationwide Building Society and Anglo Irish Bank should have been nationalised.
At the weekend, the Irish Times reported that former Taoiseach Brian Cowen said there was no question that he overruled Mr Lenihan.
Further to this, RTÉ reports:
Former Fianna Fáil minister Mary O’Rourke has confirmed the family of the late Brian Lenihan has requested input into the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry.”
“Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Ms O’Rourke said it is a fact of life that one of the main figures in the committee’s deliberations who cannot be with them is her nephew, the late Mr Lenihan.”
She says it has struck her forcibly “that those to whom he may have confided in on some matters should be given a chance to come before the committee to speak their mind.”
“We wish to put the committee under notice that we will be following events and listening to what the witnesses will be saying internally about the late Brian Lenihan and we wish, if necessary, to render the recommendations of the committee more complete.”

She said she does not have papers or records belonging to Brian Lenihan; he did confide in her on many things, as he did to Conor Lenihan. “I do not have papers or records but I have a memory. I am lucky that it is a good memory.”

Well, pledging the state to an open-ended guarantee of the debts and liabilities of several private companies with no due diligence or knowledge of what that liability could or would amount to may not TECHNICALLY be treason, i.e. under the laws that the people who did it also write, but morally I think if it ain’t, nothing is.
You could cut and paste this at any article at random, and it would make as much sense as it does here (very little, for the record).
If she has something to contribute, let her give testimony, but before any other witnesses do.
Otherwise, she’ll just try to put a spin on his legacy.
Of course she wants to spin his legacy. The biggest thing these parasites fear is blame for something actually sticking to them. Somebody made the decision to sign the country up to a massive debt resulting in the USC, property tax, water charges, cuts and other austerity measures that we have to live with but they’ll be damned if anyone ever gets to definitively say who made that decision. With Lenihan dead he can’t defend himself meaning he’s the obvious scapegoat so their duty to their family (which always, always, always comes before any duty to the electorate they supposedly served) is to distract and divert the blame.

Let’s not pretend anyone made any decisions here, best advice available at the time made the decision, and best advice available at the time rejects your contention. Move on.

The wicked witch of the west is still full of herself. How gracious of her majesty to decline the unissued invitation to appear before the committee. The sooner she and her FF cronies are worm food the better.
So basically it’s her word against Cowen’s with no repercussions for either of them one way or another. Meh.

Let her speak first, let her spill all she has to say and with times, dates of discussions when she had them if no supporting documentation.
For any politician to claim to have a memory is notable in its own right, usually they can’t remember a thing.

I have much time for Mary O’Rourke. She was responsible for delivering the Luas. I’m pretty sure she has some interesting insights or she wouldn’t be elbowing her way forward now.
