The late Fianna Fáil finance minister Brian Lenihan with his aunt Mary O’Rourke on Miriam O’Callaghan’s RTE R1 show, Miriam Meets

You’ll recall how, in January, Central Bank governor Professor Patrick Honohan told the banking inquiry that the late Brian Lenihan, then finance minister, was overruled by a senior politician on the night of the bank guarantee in September 2008.

He said he understood Mr Lenihan thought that Irish Nationwide Building Society and Anglo Irish Bank should have been nationalised.

At the weekend, the Irish Times reported that former Taoiseach Brian Cowen said there was no question that he overruled Mr Lenihan.

Further to this, RTÉ reports:

Former Fianna Fáil minister Mary O’Rourke has confirmed the family of the late Brian Lenihan has requested input into the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry.”

“Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Ms O’Rourke said it is a fact of life that one of the main figures in the committee’s deliberations who cannot be with them is her nephew, the late Mr Lenihan.”

She says it has struck her forcibly “that those to whom he may have confided in on some matters should be given a chance to come before the committee to speak their mind.”

We wish to put the committee under notice that we will be following events and listening to what the witnesses will be saying internally about the late Brian Lenihan and we wish, if necessary, to render the recommendations of the committee more complete.”

She said she does not have papers or records belonging to Brian Lenihan; he did confide in her on many things, as he did to Conor Lenihan. “I do not have papers or records but I have a memory. I am lucky that it is a good memory.”

…disgusting bit of sabre rattling emerging from the cess pool that these people inhabit. The Irish people were sacrificed at the altar of greed and the political class were exposed as the ineffectual puppets they were – and remain. The English have a word for this…its called treason.

Well, pledging the state to an open-ended guarantee of the debts and liabilities of several private companies with no due diligence or knowledge of what that liability could or would amount to may not TECHNICALLY be treason, i.e. under the laws that the people who did it also write, but morally I think if it ain’t, nothing is.

You could cut and paste this at any article at random, and it would make as much sense as it does here (very little, for the record).

If she has something to contribute, let her give testimony, but before any other witnesses do.
Otherwise, she’ll just try to put a spin on his legacy.

    1. ReproBertie

Of course she wants to spin his legacy. The biggest thing these parasites fear is blame for something actually sticking to them. Somebody made the decision to sign the country up to a massive debt resulting in the USC, property tax, water charges, cuts and other austerity measures that we have to live with but they’ll be damned if anyone ever gets to definitively say who made that decision. With Lenihan dead he can’t defend himself meaning he’s the obvious scapegoat so their duty to their family (which always, always, always comes before any duty to the electorate they supposedly served) is to distract and divert the blame.

A pox on FF and their selective amnesia about how we got where we are.

“Somebody made the decision to sign the country up to a massive debt”

That’s very naive. This is Ireland. They ‘reject the contention’.
Let’s not pretend anyone made any decisions here, best advice available at the time made the decision, and best advice available at the time rejects your contention. Move on.

  3. Tá Frilly Keane

WTF has it got to do with her?

Surely its up to Patricia, Tom and Claire to speak up

    If they feel the need

    AFAIC.
    Anyway.

    Attention seeking ol’bat.

  4. Atticus

If he “was overruled by a senior politician on the night of the bank guarantee” it can only be one person that was more senior and that was Cowen. So one of them is lying.

    1. Spartacus

The wicked witch of the west is still full of herself. How gracious of her majesty to decline the unissued invitation to appear before the committee. The sooner she and her FF cronies are worm food the better.

  5. Lilly

So basically it’s her word against Cowen’s with no repercussions for either of them one way or another. Meh.

  6. Soundings

Two political dynasties fighting over “legacy” (and avoiding by all means possible, the bag of poo of responsibility for the economic crash and bailout)

    1. Tá Frilly Keane

      And
      Let’s be honest
It didn’t cost any of them a pingin
So why do they even giv’ah phuq?

      Really?

    2. italia'90

It kind of reminds me of “two bald men fighting over a comb” when it comes to FF (or any political) people fighting over some perceived legacy.

  7. Walter-Ego

I for one, want to know what she’s going to rat about. Lets get all the dirty deals out in the open. Let the mud slinging begin and we can see more into this dirty world of Fianna Fail/ Banking/EU deals.

    1. Dubloony

Oh absolutely want to know what she has to say. but I don’t want her getting the last word on it.
Let her speak first, let her spill all she has to say and with times, dates of discussions when she had them if no supporting documentation.

For any politician to claim to have a memory is notable in its own right, usually they can’t remember a thing.

  8. HappyDub

Heard her on Newstalk earlier and immediately started laughing, can’t listen to her any more without thinking of the P Flynn & Mary sketches on pictorial weekly.

  9. 3stella

I wonder can she remember in 2000 burning 400,000 people with her (over priced against all advice) Eircom share offer….

  10. Ppads

I have much time for Mary O’Rourke. She was responsible for delivering the Luas. I’m pretty sure she has some interesting insights or she wouldn’t be elbowing her way forward now.
I’m getting really pee’ed with the level of censorship on this site btw. Feel free to delete this tread.

    1. Otis Blue

The LUAS with the two lines that don’t join up? Some achievement that.

I may have imagined it but I think she was quoted on the radio earlier saying that the enquiry without Lenihan ” would be like Hamlet without the Prince”.

      Deluded ol bag.

    2. Tá Frilly Keane

      Would ya ger’ouv’it Padsy
Minister for Transport O’Rouke was Fianna Feic em’alls biggest flop

      And she’s still pretending

      An odious greedy has been
That just won’t give be up

  11. Truth in the News

This boils down to hearsay, in effect what one “auld one said to another one”
i.e duirt bhean lo go duit bhean liom ….and the Lenihan’s, the late deceased members Father and Son, should have left around some odd scrap of paper
to shine a light on how our Fishing Resources were given away, the Niall Molloy
case, and to cap it all the Bank Gurantee and Bale Out.
If I were Mary I’d keep quiet and quit bladdering waffle.
