he makes some good points in fairness. the magic man in the sky forbids it, and marriage is also somehow entwined with nature. t!t.

I do. All the time. It’s a comically laughable precept and those who are religious are deserving of my ridicule. Does that help you any more?

Have you ever tried driving on it at rush hour? ‘Duel’ is most appropriate :)

No, different fella. Saw him outside Trinity about half an hour ago. Downgraded his sign to one that just says ‘Jesus’ now.

      1. Lorcan Nagle

I saw him walking out of town the other day with an even longer sign taped to his back.

There’s another fellah who just holds up a little bit of cardboard with JESUS on it. Being of the long hair and beard persuasion, I’m always tempted to go up to him and say “Hi, where’s the car?”

There’s also the guy with the MASSIVE yellow JOHN 3:16 sign who’s pretty aggressive if you disagree with him

It’s the ones that call to your door preachin’ (as well as the Airtricity people) that get my goat. Make me cuss like a sailor they do.

For a Referendum, its when the day of the polling day order has been signed by Fine Gael – 2nd April.

Odd how, despite regarding myself as liberal etc and committed to everyone having the right to say whatever they want, I’d like to kick the sh1t out of him. I’ll have to reflect on that.

    1. ahjayzis

Oh god no, whatEVER You do, do NOT persecute the Christians. You’ll never hear the f**cking end of it.

It might make a really poor comedy, Kid Prez or something like that, where the New Macauley Culkin style child becomes president and has a series of non comedy incidents in diplomatic situations but in the end, everyone learns how rubbish stuffy formality is, and all that really matters is family plus the appropriate number of suitable friends (3).

That’s why god doesn’t like it, and in fairness, I kind of agree.

  3. JimmytheHead

Massive amount of NO posters gone up on the Malahide road this morning. Anyone in the area fancies taking them down after work i’d be happy to help :-)

    1. sanctimoniousbroadsheetcommenter

Ah yes, somebody has a different politics to you and therefore should not be heard. You are a true democrat. By democrat, I mean idiot.

  4. Stewart Curry

He’s right, a president in his or her twenties goes against God and Nature. Vote No!

What the fupp Breda is now after sex out side of marriage she should just change her name to Breda fun police oBrien. No wonder her son is following the same line of bigotry if he got played and stoned once in a while he would probably enjoy the world a bit more.

  6. Clampers Outside!

    From the Indo UK link.
Breda O’Brien on abstinence from sex….. “abstinence was the sign of an altruistic person”.

She’s an amazing talker of utter unadulterated nonsense.

    1. sickofallthisbs

Are you worried you might lose your job? I can’t see her wanting to comment on this site.

      1. Clampers Outside!

Ah but, it’s not the same when the intent is different is it…. when I talk nonsense, I talk nonsense, Breda thinks she’s saying something worthwhile when she’s talking nonsense :)

  7. Jane

How can he wear a hat in this weather? It’s not natural and probably god is wondering what he’s up to as well.

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

No verified address. Plus he registered under 3 different names, the cheat. Doesn’t seem to understand democracy.

  8. AdvertisingOnPoliceCars

Voting No as sick and tired of having the Yes agenda shoved down my throat , or in this case up my botty.

    1. Nice Anne (Dammit)

Awwww…. it’s a damm shame you feel like this.

You do know that you viewing the YES side campaigning for equality is not the same as them inflicting sexual violence on you, don;t you?

In fact it would take a really ill, backwards mind to think in that manner. How’s the view from the Iona offices today?

  9. Angry Bird

What about the gay penguins, black swans, ducks, bison, dolphins, giraffes, polecats and dragonflies – are they not nature? If they are then nature says “YES!”

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

Nature is pretty game for any damn thing and same sex marriage is the least of its concerns.

    2. Casey

The bible also advocated that daughters did the reproductive thing with their Fathers in order to preserve a race, not only content with insest, they also advocated endogamy too. In Genesis Sarah marries Abraham, her half-brother and Lot’s two daughters conspired to inebriate and seduce their father due to the lack of available partners. In the Book of Samuel, a royal prince marries his sister.

Oh God, read here, there are too many to go into: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incest_in_the_Bible#Specific_incestuous_relationships_in_the_Bible

As for imitating nature, well there are about seven species in nature that regularly eat their young and Matriphagy is practiced by some[ insects, scorpions, nematode worms and spiders.

So if we are to imitate EVERYTHING in nature and the bible as “Bill” here is suggesting, I think a lot of us have a lot of lifestyle changes to make.

    1. Casey

The main thing to remember is that if you want your country to be a modern inclusive caring place for all its citizens to live in, vote YES.

      Ta.

if i vote ‘No’ will my Broadsheet membership be revoked? Because I thought we lived in a semi democracy where people were entitled to expess their opinions, I have no issue with people’s sexuality ( couldnt really care as adults can should do what they like. ) I do believe children need a Father and a Mother (not 2 mammies or 2 daddies.) Feel free to hurl snide abuse , seemingly witty replys. Iona institute blah di blah. Voting No ( queue gasps and hand wringing!)

    1. Lorcan nagle

You have every right to vote however you want, and to express your opinion.

Similarly I have the right to call your opinion on parenthood rubbish that has no basis in actual sociological studies.

    2. Drogg

As someone raised in a single parent family i respect your right to make an opinion but i am going to tell you your idea of what construe a family is small minded and shows how ignorant you are. Maybe you should think a little more about what your excuse for what ultimately must be homophobia or do you have issue with a single parent family that doesn’t have the mother father scenario you desire?

    3. Dubh Linn

What children need are role models commited to raising them to the best of their ability……
Sometimes that is their married parents
Sometimes that is their seperated parents co-parenting
Sometimes that is Dad and his new family and Mum and her new family co-parenting
Sometimes that is a single parent
Sometimes that is a parent and a step Father or Mother
      Sometimes that is Foster Parents
Sometimes that is a Foster Parent
      Sometimes that is adoptive parents
Sometimes that is a single adoptive parent
Sometimes that it is among the support of a huge extended family
Sometimes that is among the support of a village or community (or tribe)

Can I just ask who the feck are you to decide that the contributions of all those people in raising a child are inferiour to that of just two people of a specific gender? Studies? Proof? Testamonies? Anything to prove your narrow view of the world besides bigatory?

      Anything?

    4. bobsyerauntie

@at one time Catholics weren’t allowed to marrying Protestants in Ireland because Catholics (mostly Irish of course) were considered inferior, intermarrying between them was considered degenerate to the English colonists- this attitude persisted well up to recent times in modern Northern Ireland. Racial tensions still simmer in America, where at one time Blacks were treated worse than farm animals, bought, sold and traded. It’s not that long ago. This is not about making children have two daddy’s or two mammy’s- this is about EQUALITY!

    5. jeremy kyle

You are entitled to express your opinion and you have done so repeatedly on this thread.

Oh, but you really meant expressing your opinion and other people not being allowed to express theirs in response.

    6. ThePeoplesHero

This is said countless times. Have your own misguided and poorly informed opinions. All you want. But when you try turning them into facts to support a baseless and flawed argument, you deserve to be treated as an idiot.

You are making it about ‘mammies and daddies’ as you so childishly put it. This is as a result of you blindly adopting the position of a bunch of homophobic, bigoted religious zealots. That or you’re blissfully one of them.

It is not about ‘mammies and daddies’.

It is about marital equality for all adults as recognised by the State.

This is what a fact looks like.

    7. Sam

      You’re right… You’re the victim in this debate…
Do tell us more while I put on the kettle.

  11. Casey

What has children having a Mother and a Father have to do with the rights of two LGTB people to get married?

  12. bobsyerauntie

The most ironic thing in the marriage equality debate is when people say things like “well everyone is entitled to their own opinion”, even when the opinion expressed is implicitly hurtful and offensive- this is true, we can have opinions, and of course we are ‘entitled’ to them- but does that entitlement make view anymore or less bigoted, or homophobic, and should we allow people to express bigoted, homophobic and prejudiced views? Is saying that- god or nature thinks gay marriage is wrong- homophobic? I think it is, because if the same sign was implying that Black people were to be judged as unequal, or that Women were inferior to me, people wouldn’t tolerate it, however because the casual homophobia is so pervasive in society, people barely notice how harmful it is- hence all the more reason why the marriage equality bill most pass. Furthermore, if we were looking back on all this say 60 years from now- would we view the gay marriage situation like the way we view the civil rights rallies in 1960’s America- at that time casual racism was embedded into American society, particularly in the deep south, people were allowed to express their racism, hate and prejudice because it was viewed as socially acceptable (just like casual homophobic remarks, and views are today). It was acceptable not just to express your opinion, but also to express your racist opinion, because some of these people at this time- thought that Black people were inferior, and that they were not just undeserving of equality, it made sense to them that this was just the way things were. Blacks were also fair game for lynchings, murder, beatings, etc. In some parts of the world gays are treated like the way Blacks were treated in America or South Africa in the past, they are criminalized, and can even be put to death just for being gay, there are places in the world where gays are de-humanized completely. So when people make casual homophobic remarks they should really stop and think about that.

So, there we have it, ‘everyone is entitled to their own opinion’, even if that opinion is imbued with hatred, homophobia, irrational fear, ignorance, and might cause serious harm- in particular to young people who are trying to come to terms with their sexuality, that opinion might be the one hurtful comment too much or the one judgement too many which drives a LGBT person to kill themselves… the LGBT youth are particularly vulnerable… but hey it’s only an opinion… and we’re all entitled to opinions…

  13. bobsyerauntie

A fair few typo’s in that last comment, just saying… before the grammar Nazi’s jump all over it…

    1. Yea, Ok

Unless you’re absolutely sure your apostrophes are in the right place, don’t use one at all. Today’s tip. ;) :P
