Nicola Sturgeon (top) and the Scottish Nationalist Party.

What’s all that about?

The video isn’t working for me. I am glad to see that Scots have woken up to the fact that the English don’t give a stuff about them. “Its the culture, stupid.” was a quote I remember from the referendum. The Scottish people have a different set of values to many down south.

    1. Odis

The UK is made up of many different regional cultures. Your view is simplistic but fairly common, in fairness.

      1. The Old Boy

Quite so. There are numerous marked regional divisions within England itself; North and South, Rural and Urban, London and everywhere else.

        1. Odis

I used to work in the North West. (Lancashire/Manchester). The people in Yorkshire used to view the Lancastrians as being frivolous fools. Whilst the people in Lancashire viewed the Yorkshire people as tight fisted bigots.
Surprisingly, there was a strange truth in both arguments. This stuff dates back to the War of the Roses!
Equally the divide in cultural divide between the Northerners in the Danelaw part of England and those in the Saxon kingdom are still very pronounced.

I realise that. I was talking about the Scottish – the topic of the post. Let me know when the English regions start voting for regional parties.

          2. Odis

Really – It seems to me that you are buying in to some of the amusing stuff put around at the time of Scottish Referendum.
That the Scottish are essentially our gallant Gaelic cousins and almost as nice as ourselves.
Whereas the English are a mongrel race of psychopathic Germans and Scandinavian rapists and brigands.
It isn’t as simplistic as your reply would imply.

That is a long bow you keep drawing. Read what I wrote, stop extrapolating.

First of all, who is the political wunderkind DubEdinburgh /s? Simplification of stoners. The issues are much more complex and nuanced than can be summed up in some crappy soundbite style post. Why are ye publishing this BS?

while saying nothing about Labours lack of a strong brand, the drip that is Miliband at the forefront (although he is a very astute politician let down by his own body language), the Murdock effect and fears of UKIP, I think it is without doubt that the SNP was a toxic influence on Labour nationwide and may, ironically, have had a major influence on the Tories return to an overall majority.

    1. Dan

Labour were a toxic influence on themselves. When the media suggested a Labour/SNP coalition, the people south of the border began to panic because they didn’t want the Scots to have a say in matters of the Union. Better Together, ey?

…It wasn’t just about Independence. Labour’s policies weren’t progressive enough. Let that be a lesson…

Aside from nationalism, the SNP has no ideological core of its own and simply instrumentalises progressive ideas to advance the regressive goal of separatism. For Labour there could have been no question of a principled and trusting relationship with the SNP because you can’t build a common project for social change with someone whose first and only purpose is to smash up the political community to which you both belong. The left in England and Wales may want the UK to work differently, but they definitely want it to work. Nicola Sturgeon and her party want it to fail.

The SNP’s progressive credentials don’t, in any case, stand up to serious scrutiny. When Sturgeon was asked at her manifesto launch to name a redistributive policy enacted by the SNP in Holyrood, she was unable to cite a single example.

The SNP are currently nothing more than New Labour in tartan.

    1. Odis

It gets worse than that. Not only are they style over substance. They also have skeletons in their closet and skeletons outside the closet, for that matter.
This sort of stuff was previously reported only by the likes of Private Eye, presumably the major London press found them hard to understand. Whatever.
They now find themselves in the spot light. And Captain Slimey’s, Eton Rifles, know how to play dirty.

  4. Clampers Outside!

I dunno… according to Channel 4 news last night…. sweet FA read any of the manifestos.

The family / traditional vote is as strong in the UK as it is here and the swing from Labour is as unusual as the abandoning of FF for Labour. So, I’d doubt it was that they weren’t progressive enough.

A very simplistic view I’m taking, I know, but it holds some weight.

SNP win in Scotland has only to do with one policy, that of independence. Previous Labour voters who voted yes In referendum switched to snp immediately afterwards and it took rest of us several months to realise it had actually happened. Many didn’t believe it etc.
I expect SNP to declare independence by end of decade

      1. Dan

They have de-facto independence. Could a government, maybe the Scottish Parliament, officially establish it through a vote? I don’t know, I’m just curious.

  6. Mr. T.

She looks like she’d loaf you. She’s sort of small and sturdy in a working class way but a bit sexy all the same.

    I’m conflicted.

  7. David

Not True. Labour were feared for being too left-wing. Miliband was the Trade Union’s man and wanted to abandon the success of New Labour.

The only way Labour will recover is with a new version of Tony Blair, and I don’t see anyone of that sort coming after Miliband. The brother David must be kicking himself for not hanging around.

  8. Paolo

The SNP have royally screwed up. They could have been influential in UK politics but they have now strengthened the hand of Cameron and his horrible posse of Tories. Scotland can forget about independence for a long time. They can also kiss goodbye to any favours from Whitehall.

    1. Don Pidgeoni

The SNP have won Scotland, Labour messed up by not doing enough up there during the independence ref. Labour spat their coalition offer back in their face because the Tories were using it to scare people. I hope they cause a ruckus in Westminster.

    2. Odis

      Pretty much Paolo.
The way I see it playing out is that the Tories will try to cut into UKIP support in the South, by emulating their policies to a degree. And UKIP, in turn, will try to hit a weakened Labour in their Northern strongholds.

    3. Dan

They could never have been influential in the UK government because the right wing media wouldn’t have allowed it to happen. If Labour were able to win more seats in England and they formed a coalition with the SNP, there would have been a re-election in a couple of years because the London media doesn’t want the Scots to have any power.

    4. Dan

On independence, if Brexit goes ahead and the UK leave, expect a lot of Scots to demand a second independence referendum. I would imagine in the run up to the Brexit vote, the SNP will push for a second referendum

    1. Odis

      High Five m80.
Stick around. It’s about time people got back around to politics instead this feelings ****

      As for the video TL:DW

    2. Odis

Watched it. Excellent stuff but you won’t sell it on here. Broadsheet is very “progressive”.

      1. wonder boy in monster land

Pat is good fun and his recent tweets about the election were spot on:

Much of #Labour’s support went to #Ukip because people are sick of being patronised and having their legitimate views slandered or ignored.

The #Labour Party lost the election because it doesn’t respect the people it claims to represent, and they finally realised it. #Ukip

The words “racist” and “Islamophobe” contributed significantly to #Labour’s defeat. Keep using them, “progressives”. Keep digging the hole.

The ugliest political invective today comes from the “progressive” left. Falsely calling someone a racist is as bad as any racial slur.

Just keep calling us racists, “progressives”, and #Labour will get even fewer votes next time. People are sick and tired of it, and of you.

“Progressives”, by slandering critics of the #EU as racist, you insulted and alienated much of #Labour’s core vote and got what you deserve.

Middle class “progressives” bewailing the stupidity of the working class for not voting Labour, they voted against you. You’re the problem.

With 48% of its members living in London, #Labour should change its name to the Metropolitan Party and adopt a wine glass as its logo.
