“Galway City Council is to consider providing €10,000 to local animal rescue charity MADRA (Mutts Anonymous Dog Rescue and Adoption) in a bid to reduce the number of dogs being euthanised at Galway City’s pound.”

“The Camus-based charity, which rescues approximately 800 dogs a year, already works with the pounds in County Galway and County Mayo to rehome dogs that may otherwise be put down… Supporting the proposal at Monday’s meeting, city councillors spoke about their own dogs, with a number also raising serious concerns about under-resourcing at the pound, which is served by just one warden.”

Mmmf.

At first I’m thinking, what does Albert Camus have to do with dog charities and why would a dog charity be based on the great French-Algerian thinker, journalist, playwright, novelist, polemicist etc (although not, as is commonly thought, an existentialist as such)? While it is true that Mersault, the protagonist of his seminal absurdist work, L’Étranger, does express some concern at the maltreatment of a mangey mutt at the hands of its owner, Salamano, that does seem a little tenuous. Then I remember. Camus is also the name of a place between Casla and An Teach Dóite. And I was there last summer. Schtewpie me.

… or maybe the charity feels that their task of rehoming & adopting such a large amount of dogs is Sisyphean.

You mean to say my Camusian presumption may not be so schtewpie after all? Right enough, with it’s searing sun, azure seas, scant rainfall and sullen religiously conservative native population engaged in menial employment and resentful of frolicking middle class settlers who speak an imperial language, Conamara so resembles the Algeria of Albert’s youth.

Ultach, I can’t continue this discussion until I know what ‘schtewpie’ means :(

          2. Ultach

Short (sort of) for stupid, Zarathrusta. As in “Ah for fup sake Ultach, ye schtewpie ye”. Also spelt stupy, but that doesn’t really capture the pronounciation.

indeed, with the bulbous ,mottled natives, the fruit of the West and the pearl of the visiting East, the velvet brown skin and pert bosoms of dear Marie, being just a hazy memory…sigh
