Ah great. Wetherspoons create loads of jobs.

Like the way starbucks create loads of jobs. Look how many people have jobs since Starbucks arrived in Ireland. Nearer that 100% employment rate every day now

Three cheers for multinational corporations that suck wealth out of a country, and replace good jobs with shit ones.

Thankfully we don’t live in a centrally planned economy where the feelings of one angry bureaucrat get to decide what’s best for everyone else.

No, hang on a minute Bernard.
      Are you trying to say
      1) Traditional pubs pay great wages and Wetherspoons pay crap wages?
      2) Wetherspoons is good beer, good food at cheap prices. Whilst Starbucks = Expensive trendy coffee.
      3) Multinational corporations – Many people are off the bread line thanks to the likes of Aldi and Lidl who pay over the odds for their employees
      4) **** off, you silly ****.

      1. Bernard

        1. Not saying that
        2. Or that
        3. Am I trying to say multinational corporations? what?
        4. Are you ok?

I’m saying that companies that aren’t Irish owned, and that don’t pay tax in Ireland until they’ve killed off all indigenous competition are not a good thing.

People drink the same amount of coffee now as they did before starbucks. The only difference is that the profit that would have gone to a person living in Ireland is sent back to the starbucks mothership. That profit could have been spent in Ireland and…. indirect employment…. income tax… owners not employees…. sucking money out of the economy…

actually never mind. Yes I’m saying all those things you said. Well done you

If retail had been left to the local shop, Dunnes and SuperValu, like it was twenty years ago we would be paying €5 for a toasting loaf by now. As it is I pay 0.69c in Aldi now. I was probably paying about £0.90 back then.
Whatever you say, our shopkeepers were screwing us. Our pub owners still are.

Though I do appreciate what you are saying, but there are other places, to buy your fancy coffee from, other than Starbucks, though you will note its usually just as dear.
Sadly, you can’t say the same about the price of a pint in a pub. I hope Wetherspoons kick ass in that respect. Sorry, sick of being screwed.

    Good riddance to bad pubs.

Wetherspoons sell pints for €1.95 next door to pubs that charge €5.50 for the same thing. People in Ireland have been exploited for far too long by Diageo/the LVA. The more Wetherspoons we get the lower prices will be driven.

I’ll never forget being out in town one Friday recently, and getting a couple of coins change from a tenner for one pint. Then going to Wetherspoons on the Saturday night, and getting change from a tenner note for a round of FIVE pints. Yes different locations, staff costs etc etc. But still. Its eye-opening.

the news about wetherspoon opening the pubs in blanch and swords has been on their website for weeks. they do have supply problems. I was in their pub in dun laoghaire recently and they had no ale on draught.

I can’t wait until Weatherspoons open more pubs. Bottles of Erdinger for €2.95. That’s how much they charge in Supervalu.

It’s almost €6 in most pubs.

      Here Here,

People will complain about Wetherspoons, but I can guarantee it will be the place to go once here. They are what they are. I lived in the UK for a few years and would never be embarrassed to go to ‘spoons. You can get a Burger (inc.Chips & Onion Rings) plus a Pint for about € 8.00! Granted it’s not a gourmet menu but there is enough to keep people happy.

The charm of paying € 6 for a continental beer in another pub when it can be bought for € 3 will wear out. I’m personally getting sick of ordering 2 pints, handing over a €20 and getting back a € 5 and some shrapnel.

Maybe if the vintners protested about the pricing and tax, rather than competition, they might have more sympathy.

The thing about Wetherspoons is, there’s no craic to be had in them: lights turned up full blast, all the seats are arranged how tables next to people eating their dinner, no music, no fun. Great for cheap booze though and I’d welcome more of them because as stated above, €5 change from a score for two drinks is utterly pathetic.
