I doodled this drawing yesterday to celebrate the referendum, now it’s being shared about Instagram and Facebook. A friend suggested I send it in to ye. I’m a Canadian studying medicine in Dublin for four years and I’m so incredibly proud of my adoptive country for the message they sent the world this week! Grá IS the law! The only thing that matters! Wishing everyone future happiness and a speedy recovery from the hangovers…

This really struck me. Thought it might do the same to you guys. Made by my friend Liosa Mac Namara.

Ah lovely
Beautiful. So proud.
The true marriage referendum tally:
Voted Yes: 36%
Voted No: 24%
Didn’t Vote: 40%
Not quite true. the register is out of date. Many people are double registered or may be registered and no longer live in Ireland (as in they live abroad and/or are dead), so in fact the true turnout was around 90%.
by not voting they gave their implicit agreement to ehoever won – 76% yes by your count. That’s a whopper
“by not voting they gave their implicit agreement to whoever won”
You have no proof of this.
of course they did, if they didn’t seek to influence the outcome?
You have no proof of pretty much anything you say, though the one thing you are quite clearly saying right now is that you are a bitter individual who likes to rain on other people’s happiness.
Well today, my dear Zuppy, that ain’t gonna work! Here’s hoping you find happiness in your life at some stage. Until then, go suck a lemon! xxx
If a vote is not used then that voter has no right to complain about the result. By not voting 39.48% of the electorate handed the decision over to the 60.52% that did and in doing so they have, to all intents and purposes, agreed to be bound by that decision.
To put it another way, vote or shut up and live with the outcome.
Or – and this is a statement of opinion – 40% of the electorate decided not to cede their authority to the state on this matter.
But hey, if you choose to live under the semiotic atrocity that is “…persons without distinction as to their sex” then the best of luck to you.
Which by my count is still a majority of people who voted choosing yes.
this guy again
I know, someone is daring to express their opinion on a global telecommunications network! Quelle domage!
Don’t you sneer, with your mocking “global telecommunications network”… wait and you see Broadsheet will be like OCP in Robocop in a few years… once they wipe out Dinish and the Australian guy with all the liver spots… wait n’ you’ll see! Mark my words. Runnin’ the place they will !
Broadsheet.ie values recyclable memes. State of the art clickbait commanded by a uniqe combination of software and organic systems
Clearly if 40% didnt vote they were not that passionate about it not passing. To me that just means they didnt care that it passed.
Ah lads.
Still getting emotional. What a weekend. So, SO glad I could make it home to vote.
And fair play to you to Kieran! :)
Great weekend, I got nothing done :) …damn it
Extra ‘to’ strolled in there unnoticed…
The downfall of humanity has already started then…
Do I get my free baby in the post or do I have to collect coupons?
;)
I had to go to a 50th in manchester saturday night, and im only home this evening. Everyone over there knew about the, referendum and everyone i spoke to were amazed and delighted at how emphatic the result was. On the flight home though, i couldnt help but think about a lad i grew up with who committed suicide because his family couldnt accept his sexuality. I have no real point to make here, except to ask that ye spare a thought for those for whom this wonderful day came too late.
Well said.
Thanks Scottser
