Ah here.

The Guardian reports:

“’I was deeply saddened by the result,’ Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, said at a conference in Rome on Tuesday night. ‘The church must take account of this reality, but in the sense that it must strengthen its commitment to evangelisation. I think that you cannot just talk of a defeat for Christian principles, but of a defeat for humanity.'”

“… with his choice of words, Parolin differed from the pope in one respect: the Argentinian pontiff has also used the phrase “defeat for humanity”, but he was talking about war, not the legalisation of gay marriage.”

In fairness.

A giant of a man. Fair play to him for speaking up. Irish bishops need support. Their own are quick to betray and Ireland is suffering from a serious disease consisting of renegade heretical priests, a la carte lay people an empty decedent culture, a feminist media and a compliant government with no vision. Irish bishops need to act. The days of making statements and pastoral letters are over.

There are more anti human lies hoping to be codified into Ireland’s statutes coming down the line.

      “Irish bishops need to act”

Would be very interested as to what you mean by that?!

      1. scottser

capes and tights man, capes and tights. when you get past cardinal you get these super powers..

    2. Stewart Curry

So what should they be doing instead of making statements and writing letters? Armour up and go on a crusade against those nasty feminists who apparently run the media now?

        1. Joe the Lion

          Gotcha

          Heretic:
a dissenter from established religious dogma; especially : a baptized member of the Roman Catholic Church who disavows a revealed truth

Go on – explain what a “revealed truth” is please

        2. The Heretics

          Hiya ABM,
We don’t go to Church so you can tick that one off your list.
          You’re welcome.

  2. Joe the Lion

Again why should I even care why some guy in a dress is going Wah Wah Wah? Unless the man won’t allow him marry who he chooses? Tick

      1. Joe the Lion

No I only care about this man getting airtime here. His opinion is irrelevant to me.

          1. Don Pidgeoni

Maybe because another out-of-touch church official has come out with a statement which is insulting not just to LGBTQ people but to Ireland as an entire nation. The church may be increasing in other parts of the world but they will die out in Ireland soon enough.

      1. Cian

nope, it’s the shag afterwards that consummates the marriage.

I don’t know if it has to be a particular *type* of shag, perhaps it must be in the missionary position? Are there rules surrounding the consummation? anyone know?

      2. pedeyw

        Wrong:
“Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.”
As approved by the Irish people.
        Ha.

  3. Martin

If marriage equality is a “defeat for humanity”, what does he call the day the Vatican decided to write rules on how to protect child raping priests?

  4. delta V

I thought to myself “these guys are so out of touch with reality” and then realised he’s an old man in a dress and funny hat, never mind the fairy stories they think are real…

    1. newsjustin

Classic media trick. One never, ever published a photo of a smiling cardinal/bishop for a story like this. A smiling priest is permissible if he supports your cause.

  5. Kolmo

Who still listens to the voice of the oddly clad citizens of the worlds smallest country? How can they still wield influence over some Irish people after decades of the worst kind of scandal you could imagine, the absolute worst – and they still turn up every Sunday and kneel in front of their altars…it is hard to understand.

    1. newsjustin

Thinking that Irish people turn up because of priests and bishops is your mistake there. That’s what’s causing you to be confused.

  6. Well, that's that

They need to keep their beliefs inside the church doors and not try to impress them on others of non-faith or different beliefs. It’s very insulting to the French government also that the Vatican, an independent country itself, can’t be civil enough to look beyond religion for international affairs. How childish.

  7. Wayne.F

Maybe he can even up the score board by, paying up the outstanding compensation the Irish church owes it’s abide victims. Or if they are still tight for cash they could magically find the documents that would help children find their natural mothers after being sold by the church

  8. John

much like Fianna Fáil they are another men only club that is fading into irrelevance!! and the sooner the better

  9. Odis

You’ll be sorry, you Yes voters. You didn’t realise the consequences of your actions. It’s to late for turning back now. Humanity doesn’t just fix with super glue – you know.

    1. Dubloony

If you have an entire organisation sworn to celibacy, surely that would defeat humanity?

And what on earth does he mean by a statement like that? Many people I know who take their religion seriously voted yes as an act of love for their family members, and taking the commandment of love thy neighbor rather more seriously than the Vatican does.

      1. newsjustin

The “entire organisation” is 1.2 Billion people. So a celibate priesthood of a few hundred thousand is no biggie.

        1. Wait For It

Is that an accurate figure?Since you can no longer officially opt out of Catholicism,I suspect this figure includes a large number of people who received baptism but no longer identify as Catholic.

  10. Ppads

He really doesn’t get it does he? It was the humanity of people talking to people that won the vote. Unless he thinks that gay people are somehow less human of course. Now that would not surprise me.

  11. nellyb

He couldn’t look any more bored. Would rather watch the stock tickers on his heretic smart phone and check out new Vatican arrivals. There are some lookers there, all right. Fit for the chapel’s ceiling.

  12. Mr. T.

If ABM was a civil servant and made a decision in his job based on loyalty to the Vatican instead of the laws of his country, he should be tried and jailed for treason.

  13. rotide

Poo like this is gold for Broadsheet.

Guarenteed tut tuting, with everyone in agreement and a near certain ABM contribution to get everyone riled.

    Circlejerk guarenteed

    1. Joe the Lion

And then rotide to make some idiotic commentary claiming some imagined superiority

  14. Lorcan Nagle

My favourite part of this is that so many of the people claiming to be concerned yes voters on here are showing their true colours now, and shockingly they’re nowhere near as tolerant as they claimed to be before the referendum.

    1. Odis

Come on Lorcan – Tolerant?? The Yes campaign?
There was a post about “Teachers for No” with a picture of three campaigners. And there were three comments, to the effect that these “bigots” should be hounded out of their jobs.

          1. Lorcan Nagle

Yes, that’s clear. However, it doesn’t make much sense as a discussion or counterpoint to what I said.

      1. Joe the Lion

And so they should be. Why they were explicitly stating if you read their manifesto was an intention to disseminate misleading, incorrect and counterfactual data to children to whom they are paid to educate.

    2. jeremy kyle

This was just the start, we won’t stop until all of humanity is eradicated.
