Their attitude to the stats released last week was repugnant. “26 babies murdered” was the common phrase. It just goes to show that they don’t care a bit about women’s health, welfare or lives. Twenty Six women were saved. Surely that’s something to be celebrated? Or do these so-called pro life groups hate women and mothers being in control of their own bodies that much that they’d rather see them dead?

Genuine question – because I didn’t see it – who/what organisation used the phrase “26 babies murdered” or similar?

      1. Sue

Had a man tell me last week that he cared a lot about women ‘especially the ones who aren’t born yet’. I pointed out, that what that means is they become less of a priority once born. He got very angry then.

Comments on the Journal, people on Twitter, Life News saying babies were “killed”. No celebration of the lives of the women saved.

It’s incomprehensible that Woman < Foetus to these "pro-lifers"

Thanks Daisy. I would have thought that most pro-life people would be understanding that (I think I remember the figures right) 23 or the 26 abortions were required to save the life of the mother, so were necessary and, by most pro-life people’s standards not actually an abortion. The other 3 were in the grey area of a threatened suicide.

    Petty.

Group has a hotel launch campaigning to repeal the 8th…isn’t it great. A poster for a march…”American dollars”.

          1. newsjustin

            Sorry Don. Couldn’t resist.

I felt it was petty because instead of ignoring a poster for an event, or flagging it and taking issue with the objectives of the protest, the contributor has decided to claim that the poster was funded by “American dollars”. All the while ignoring the fact that there are pro-choice events all the time, including one reported on here this morning.

          2. Don Pidgeoni

That’s not petty to Starina, who is very clearly pro-choice. I’m sure she will be along to explain herself but having an issue with your political or moral opposition is not being petty.

And they could get around the American donations thing by releasing information on where their funders come from. But its a pretty badly kept secret

as the illustrious Don linkes to, it’s been shown that the far right in Ireland have received US funding. there was also an incident last year where there was an anti-choice march down o’connell st and americans were flown in to swell the numbers.

          4. Starina

mainly though it was the phrase “stand up against abortion” reminded me very strongly of the “don’t be bullied, vote no” posters during the referendum.

Maybe you can persuade youth defence and their various sister groups to register with SIPO and produce public donor reports to refute the claims?

    1. sickofallthisbs

Somebody has the audacity to have their own opinion that isn’t trendy and BS readers don’t like that!

  3. Fluter bad

Oh no! Somebody has a different view from the rest of us!! Quick call the offended hotline. 1800 whogivesas

Interesting to see how many turn up on Saturday.
    Predictions:
    – Possibly a few thousand but when reported will have a few extra 0’s added.
    – All the young ones will be pushed up the top.
    – Straight on group pic with all the signs up, making it look like there’s more than there are.
    – A nun or two.
    – Home made signs replaced by glossy ones. Avoiding anyone being off message.
    – Cliche ridden comments from all sides.

        1. newsjustin

One could write a similar list claiming to describe a pro-choice protest. Someone’s probably doing it as we speak on a Youth Defence message board somewhere. Look in the mirror people.

    1. Stephanenny

Only two nuns? Are you mad? I was at the counter demo last year, it was like a vestments expo. Saw about thirty different kinds of nun/priest/monk dress that I’ve never seen before.

  5. AlisonT

Its amazing how some people on here seem to this that the only people who object to abortion on demand are religious. You can have a moral stand on protecting the unborn without it coming from religion.

    1. scottser

true, you can have a moral stand on this issue without it being an inherently religious position. still doesn’t make that stand justifiable in terms of the mother’s right to bodily integrity.

      1. sickofallthisbs

Arra shut up it’s not simply about the mother’s bodily or integrity or “rights”. It is about whom we as a society define who is the most vulnerable:

Is it the pregnant woman with a vote, with agency and the ability to do as she chooses or the foetus who cannot act for itself and is subject to the whim of another person’s desires. Or, you know, the father of the child or the sperm donor (depending on the way the child was conceived).

As an aside, I delight in the irony that a website that promoted equality so vigorously doesn’t a) promote the other side to the abortion debate in a similar fashion to how they promote the pro-choice side or b) think about the full entitlement of both parents to the welfare of a foetus.

        1. scottser

a/ a situation where a woman is refused treatment to end pregnancy, for whatever reason, is not a situation of equality for the woman involved. she is being bullied and denied her right to be consented to be treated.

b/ and if both parents want a termination, what then?

    2. realPolithicks

You can have whatever moral viewpoint you want, it still doesn’t give you the right to interfere with a woman’s right to choose.

      1. newsjustin

That’s not true and not borne out in reality. A woman’s right to choose (to have an abortion) is not an absolute right. Even in countries where abortion is widely available there are limits on a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion.

    3. Stephanenny

And yet I’ve literally never met one and there isn’t a single anti-choice group in Ireland that isn’t run by religious conservatives.

    4. d4n

It’s because if you’re not religious there’s no reason to believe that ‘life begins are conception’, that belief is reliant on the religious notion that at conception there’s a soul present.
If you don’t believe there’s a soul present, then there’s no reason to believe that the rights and protections extended to people apply. There’s certainly no reason to believe that a fetus’ rights outweigh those of an adult.
Whether or not someone has a moral objection to abortion is irrelevant to law if that objection is purely subjective.

  6. Lorcan Nagle

There’s a counter-rally on O’Connell Street at 2PM, and if you want to get involved in the pro-choice movement the Abortion Rights Campaign’s next open meeting is on the 26th of July, in either Outhouse or the Teacher’s Club, depending on how many people say will be coming.
