Well done on not adopting the patronising approach of RTE and the independent calling this a stunning success and our best ever result. The medals are handed out for participation so stop the pretence that this is a proper competition.

    1. ReproBertie

If it’s not a proper competition why do they give some competitiors gold medals, some silver and some bronze?

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

It’s gold, silver, bronze for first, second, third and ribbons for all places after that to acknowledge participation. Even in the regular Olympics the participants get certificates to say they took part. So the Special Olympics are nowhere near as patronising as the “everyone gets a medal” special snowflake rubbish of sports days or tag rugby.

          1. Jonotti

The fact that Ireland won twice as many medals as placement ribbons completely negates your argument.

          2. Dόn Pídgéόní

That negates your point. As a team, they were good enough to win medals against other competitors rather than get the sympathy medal like you.

        2. Mick Flavin

What could have brought about such low self-esteem in a three-time tag rugby international cap winner, that splitting hairs over the Special Olympics in order to make people mad on the internet is an acceptable way to spend your time?

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Sometimes I miss ABM… now that was a troll

            *stares dreamily into the distance*

          2. mike

Yeah ABM had creativity and a wild spark of spontaneity. This guy’s efforts are dull and predictable.

  2. Peter Dempsey

I wonder how many of them would be around if abortion was legal in Ireland when their mothers became pregnant?

    1. Dόn Pídgéόní

I did not see this coming….

But I’m sure they would probably have been fine.

    2. Mani

I wonder if cilla black is currently atop Cecil the lion in heaven guarding the borders from illegal immigrants. The minds a gas thing altogether.

    3. Jonotti

Close to 100% are aborted in some European countries. We of course do things differently in Ireland. I remember the only swimming pool around me for miles was for the handicapped.

      1. ahjayzis

        Bet you were well jell.

The handicapped, the lunatics and the faggots get everything *stamps foot*

        1. jonotti

I don’t like how some people think and I like to express my opinions about this. I have the good sense to temper my views in person when real human relationships are involved but I can fully express them online which makes me happy.

  3. Mr. T.

Hey Jonotti. You’re the one playing Tag Rugby – a pathetic game of needy boys and girls playing chasing.

    Snigger.

    1. Jonotti

You’re just bitter because you embarrassed yourself with your bouncing tits and general lack of athleticism the one time you joined your work team.

      1. Peter Dempsey

Mr T sounds like one of those up-his-own-arse types who refuses to socialise with work colleagues.

      2. Mr. T.

        I prefer swimming and football.

And no I don’t like socializing with work colleagues because they’re mostly idiots.

      3. Drogg

Jonotti i totally understand now, your not man enough to play full contact so you would rather run about pulling little strips off peoples shorts. I can totally see now why you think our amazing athletes today who competed at the highest level are less then your little run around game, its cause you are a d**k, its ok it is very common in tag rugby circles i hear they are working on a vaccine for it.

          1. Drogg

Really? I wonder have we worked together i do some work with the team any funny enough any of the guys i have met have been great supporters of the Special Olympic athletes i wonder did your fellow team mates know that your such a d**k.

          2. Drogg

So you are not from Ireland but are on the other thread saying how we should be closing our borders, dude you are confused.

  4. Murtles

I’d say if the majority of us tried to compete with any of our medallists in their respective disciplines, we’d be put put to shame fairly quickly and end up sporting a bruised ego. They’ve trained hard, they’ve competed, they’ve won. Fair play to everyone of them.

  5. bisted

…Jonotti…3 words…Ruth Dudley Edwards. She owns the Special Olympics gold for trolling this subject. When it comes to abusive vitriol you would only be in the ha’penny place with this lady. Go find a softer target.
ps Sinn Féin, eYawn O’Riordan and Very Prone are already taken.

jonotti really needs to get his head examined. the special olympics athletes epitomize all that is good about sport.

    1. jonotti

      Athletes…please.

Ireland sent 88 participants who “won” 82 medals.

At London 2012 we sent 66 athletes who returned with 5 medals which was one of our most successful olympics of all time.

Its all fine and good fun for everyone involved but its the patronising tone that gets me. The collective pretense in the media that this is a real competition.

      1. Don Pidgeoni

You are the one patronising them by assuming they haven’t won their medals by being one of the three best competitors. But you are too dumb to even see that.

  7. :-Joe

I can kind of see where jonotti is coming from, why are we making a big fuss over these “handicapped” people all the time?

I think it’s great that Ireland goes 100% and makes a big deal of it, it says a lot about people on this little patch of muck. I have to say I can’t help thinking where’s the fuss for the homeless, the migrants and the long list of other social minorities but maybe we’ll get to 100% there too eventually.

I just don’t get the problem with them being “athletes”, unless by not being athletes you mean they are not on steroids like many rugby players and other able bodied athletes?

Surely, if they competed in sport under a fair system of rules and the medal system is the same that makes them officially Special Olympic Athletes?.. Just like skateboarders and snowboarders are considered athletes in the Olympics and those dudes in the wheelchair Olympics from that film murder ball.

It sounds like you resent them for showing our other group of Olympic hopefuls a thing or two and maybe stole some thunder in the process. Get over it and be happy for them.

How did the they do in the boxing btw.. was there any cubans involved?..

    :-J

    1. scottser

jonotti just hasn’t seen the southpark episode where cartman thinks it would be a doddle to win a special olympics event, or that jonny knoxville movie where he does the same.

    2. Caroline

No serious athlete or well-adjusted human gives a fk what they call Special Olympians, or resents the attention they get. It’s like people getting all weepy about the Women’s Mini Marathon not actually being a marathon… no real people actually care. Quibbling like that is total beta behaviour, and highly entertaining.

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Careful Caroline, he’ll start boring you to death with stories of his apparent sporting achievements
