That Macbook Air.

Found in Temple Bar, Dublin.

Found the owner, folks, thanks. I did it by using terminal and resetting password as outlined by Nialler (see below). I have contacted the owner in the country they live in and am posting it to them….

Nialler’s tip: Boot the machine while holding cmd-R, go through the language stage of recovery mode then in the utilities menu at the top go to Terminal, once terminal launches type the following: ‘resetpassword’ Up pops the reset password utility, reset the users password then log in. Go to the users contacts and find the Me contact and give him a call. Simples!!

On one hand I’m delighted for the owner.. on the other, I’m kinda shocked at how simple it is to bypass Apples security.

Howld on, is it really that simple to reset the password on a macbook and Is it that easy on windows laptop too?

On my Windows laptop it says that if the password is forgotten, then I’ll have to reinstall the operating system.

Not at all that simple on a windows laptop , but there are ways.

But I guess if you’re silly enough to leave your laptop lying around , chances are you’re silly enough not to have adequate encryption / security protocols.

What does that mean, practically? You’re asked for an extra password to access various drives, and to log in from start up, while they are more difficult for a third party to bypass? Is that correct?

Bios UEFI and Firmware would prevent someone from booting usb drives with other operating systems and tools looking to remove / access your data through a bootable operating system
These would only require extra passwords if you wanted to change settings before the operating system boots.

If someone has time and physical access to your computer , Bitlocking the harddrive is the only way to secure it.
Practically Bit locker works by , windows log on , separate password , USB key , or a combination of the 3.

As James said Firmware Password, the above solution is not common knowledge so I’d prefer if it was taken down. But thanks for the hat tip.

BTW gents any information stored in the keychain is lost by this method unless you have the original password, so passwords etc are all gone and keychain is reset.
