I know you don’t normally do this but I’m a young Dublin based artist and was hoping that you could promote my new venture into illustration. It came from a love of all pawed and non-pawed creatures. A nice gift for the animal lover in your life. They are vector images drawn on a graphics pad using Adobe Illustrator and printed on high quality paper. I would like to offer a free illustration to one of your readers. Personalised Pet Portrait Prize goes to a pet-owning reader with the most heart-tugging reason for needing a portrait of their pet..Just complete this sentence:

Update:

The winner is Claire: “I got my lad 11 years ago and have been without him for 3 now. After a good friend and my Granny passed away in the one week, my mam decided it would be a real comfort and I was elated that the petitions I had left around my gaf as a kid, pleading for one had come to fruition. It was the only thing I ever really wanted as a kid, and the one thing I was proud to introduce and say was all mine. He was the most loyal, placid, and compassionate fella. He was the one person that was always there regardless, sharing garlic cheese chips together at 4 in the morning,or just licking my face when I wasn’t myself. He was my best pal and carrying him in my arms lifeless and limp with his big brown eyes just about hanging in there, knowing he wasn’t coming home, was heartbreaking. He gets a mention in my house daily because he was so integral and such a character. One of these would look lovely in our kitchen for Buddy :)”

Thanks all.

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to the fact that hes fallen in with the wrong crowd ( a gang of mad dogs) and may get killed by a rival dog gang sooner or later.

  2. Mustafa

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to her delusion that we’re holding her against her will and that her parents – Heath Ledger and Brittany Murphy – are going to rescue her any day now. She’s very vain and easily distracted so a fine portrait such as this could help us avoid some awkward conversations.

  3. Elly Parker

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to the fact that she will never stay still long enough to take a photo of her! She’s a constant blur of motion all day long. She’s also the first pet that I was allowed to have in my life (mean parents), so knowing that I will likely outlive her by decades, I’ve love a picture to remember her by in years to come. :-)

I really badly need a tribute of my wife/gf owing to____________________________________

I badly need a portrait of my pet because She wants one.

    And what that b1tch wants
    She gets
She assumes a right of entitlement that is matched by the Windsor family, Taylor Swift and Celebrity Vegans
And if they all have portraits
    Her droopy runny eyes demand
    “Where’s my one Mummy”

    And Jane,
When she eventually *thud-dump thud-dump thud-dumps herself out’ve the bed
    Mine btw.
I’ll ask her if she thinks your work is good enough for her

*that’s what 35 kilos sound like in the mornings, coming home, and rainy days ….

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to the fact that they (sorry, cheeky) are both rescue kitties (one abandoned by mammy, one found in the engine of a car), run our house, ruin our furniture, sit in the sink when we’re on the loo, are afraid of tin foil, have been on Broadsheet, run after birdies and are so busy we can’t get a good photo of them.

      Phew.

  7. the good helen

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to the fact he is the bestest doggy in the whole wide world. He is a rescue of 11 puppies and such a well behaved if not a little excited dog. He’s 5 months old and has the strength of a Bull and yet the gentleness to kiss our 5 year old son every morning. he’s a cheeky little thing and I think a picture to capture his wonderfulness would make me even prouder to be his human mammy.

  8. DeSelby

I really need a portrait of an illustrator who has just discovered the live-trace function in adobe illustrator and uses it to ‘illustrate’ other peoples photographs of their pets

  9. Kam and Oscar

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to……. remind me that I am owned by 2 cats that spend 16hrs a day sleeping in hidden places. I would be just lovely to have a portrait to see what they look like when they’re not waking me up at 4AM.

  10. nononottheface

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to my little sister moving away, and the family dog is bereft, and the sister is not much better. Separated by the width of Ireland, I think the distance might shrink if my sister could see a portrait of her pooch on the bedroom wall. If you choose this particular plea you will be making a huge difference to a friend you haven’t met yet!

  11. Robyn

I badly need a portrait of my pet (Rascal), as she has had a hard life, and knowing her luck may not last much longer. She was:
    * Born in South Africa
    * Mauled by a dog, survived and nursed back to health
    * Emigrated to Ireland with her then owner, and went through 6 months in quarantine
    * On release from quarantine, she was hit by a car, lost an eye, survived and nursed back to health
    * Suffered the loss of her owner
    * Was going to go back to South Africa, but didn’t want to go through quarantine/couldn’t afford 1st class airfare
    * Passed around various minders, none willing to keep her for long
    * The greatest injustice of all – brought to live with me, where she has honed her skills as a late night assassin, typically trying to knock me down the stairs.

If that isn’t deserving of a portrait, I don’t know what is!

  12. Elisa

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to his own vanity. He’s not content with the selfies on the fridge anymore

  13. SiJu Cat

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to a break up I never get to see our cat anymore. SiJu (Simon Junior – a little vain to name after myself) was a rescue cat I hand reared inside for 18 months before he became an outside cat. Would love a proper portrait to hang on the wall!

    1. Jane F

Guaranteed! Winner announced soon. Thanks for all the applications. I’d like to draw for you all, maybe I can, it’s not very expensive. Fifty for a framed one and thirty five unframed. Ah go on. :)

  14. Damian

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to the fact that I don’t have a dog but would love to get this done for my sister as her dog is a fantastic loyal companion called Buddy.

  15. Dav

My girlfriend really badly needs a portrait of her pet owing to the fact the she died earlier this year and could really do with a keepsake. Cartman (that’s right, her FEMALE pet cat Cartman) passed away at the ripe old age of 16 and is still sorely missed. Things are a little tense in our house atm as we’re currently working on a short film together and she’s shouldering most of the work. Something like this would be a great way of showing appreciation for all the work she’s done and paying tribute to her favorite kitty.

  16. Bubbles

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to the fact that he’s my mother’s only true love and that although we don’t talk about it, he’s just reached the end of his 15 x 7 = 105th year and might not live forever… It would be nice to have a memory of him in his “prime”.

  17. The Downes Side

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing to how rarely I see her. I’m in college away from home and student accommodation doesn’t allow pets.

  18. Lara

I really need a portrait my pet because

She was with us for 14 years, we rescued her from doggy death-row in Virginia, USA, and after 7 years we moved her with us to Dublin. For the past 8 years she was my company all day long and when we had to put-her-down it broke my heart. We have a photo of her on the mantle, and her ashes on the shelf — your portrait could bring her into our life again, every day.

  19. COMCOM

I really badly need a portrait of my pet cat owing to the fact that he was given the name of the famous Spanish portrait painter ‘Goya’, despite the clear lack of creative ability we had expected in him. Initially, we had hoped he might channel the genius of such an illustrious predecessor to capture for himself the fine points of his whiskers and the soft textures of his fur on canvas. Instead, he has taken a rather predictive interest in fine food and sunshine!

  20. IrishBird

I badly need a picture of my Cat and Chinchilla together, as I lost them in my messy divorce, and I miss them more than anything.

  21. Joe cool

I badly need a portrait of my pet owning to the fact, my 6 year old cat Boo tore his cruciate ligament 2 weeks ago. I’m a 37 year old man and cried liked a child with worry over him. I count him as one of my children

  22. Mani

I take it no one is going to address the fact that someone called their dog ‘Tilly Bleu’?
    This place has changed, maaaaaan.

  23. Avon Barksdale

I really badly need a portrait of my pet because, as a dog and previous pet myself, I understand how frustrating it is not to be appreciated by ones human, who simply refused to hang portraits of me all over his council house, my dream is to afford my pets the luxuries I was never granted. Also, they lick their butts

    1. Avon Barksdale

Or,mid it’s a sob story you want like most are giving here, one of my (now former) cats Sagan last year decided he would rather live with a neighbour, but he’s kind enough to pop around into the yard every now and again as a reminder of what I could have had (an ungrateful sh*t). A portrait of either of my non-traitorous furry friends would solidify their place in my home, at least until they find fancier food in a neighbouring apartment

  24. CaptainWobblyLadders

I really badly need a portrait of my pet owing my need to hang it alongside my other one of dogs in waistcoats playing billiards, so that as a particularly demanding cat she doesn’t feel left out by only having her likeness represented in multiple freestanding staircase sculptures, two gateposts, a frieze and a personalised bowling ball.
