Nordies of both colour say “baxing deh”…. its just a consequence of living under British rule. It IS boxing day in the six counties on Dec 26th afterall.

Nordies of all ‘persuasions’ call it Boxing Day. And the British readers of the Torygraph wouldn’t understand what Stephens’s Day was, except an awful overuse of S’s.

“Boxing Day” has been a holiday in the UK since the 1830s. It was declared a holiday as St Stephens’s Day in Ireland in 1870ish. Probably because they wanted a holiday but wanted to be different from Great Britain. At that point the “six counties” referred to it as St Stephens’s Day. After the establishment of the Free State the “six counties” reverted to Boxing Day as they were then part of the UK. Personally “St Stephens’s Day” is a real mouthful.

It was ordered by “he who must not be named”, who as we all know is the devil incarnate.

Everyone in Donegal calls it Boxing Day too.

I moved away from there (to other parts of Ireland) when I was 18 and it still seems funny to force myself to say St Stephen’s Day…
