What you may need to know:

1. Where to start? Basically, an unexplained event has caused 2% of the population to disappear and everyone else loses it.

2. New season, new location. Season 2 is set in a town with zero disappearances.

3. Most of season 1’s cast have gone as well, but carryovers include Mr. Jennifer Aniston, Liv Tyler and Christopher Eccleston (making this one of the few series where he hasn’t been killed off in the first couple of episodes).

4. No sign of the Guilty Remnant yet. They’re probably on a stationary run.

5. Unrelentingly bleak and seriously depressing, The Leftovers is a very hard sell. Also, the presence of Lost (2004-10) showrunner Damon Lindelof has left many understandably wary of signing up to another open-ended mystery.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: As grim as a week in Holyhead.

When: Mondays (Sky Atlantic).

My wife and I loved the first series. Watched S2 E1 last night, was confused as hell about what was going on but by the end of it we were both really looking forward to the next episode.

Agreed. Series 1 was the best new show on TV of last year, and I’ve a feeling series 2 will propel it to the best show currently airing full stop. It may end at that as it’s struggling for viewers – as said above, it’s a hard sell but also its ideas will stay in your head and it is profoundly moving at times.

I thought the opening episode was a decent attempt to move a flagging story premise in a different direction.

Of course, it’s already obvious as hell that the focus of the season is going to be about the fact that the town obviously has not been immune from the “disappearances” but that the towns-folk are doing their utmost to maintain that illusion.

Small-town collective secrets are the fuel that drives this kind of story-telling.
