‘A Peaceful Stand-Off’

“Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council issued a letter to residents at around 11am this morning informing them that work was to begin on a plot of land in the Rockville Drive estate immediately to accommodate the survivors of Saturday’s fire which claimed 10 lives.”

“The letter from the council states that the accommodation is only on a temporary basis, until the construction and refurbishment of a permanent site is completed, which is due to take eight months.”

“However residents of the estate this morning blocked the entrance to the plot of land, preventing a JCB from beginning the proposed construction work. A peaceful stand-off ensued with residents refusing to move their vehicles which were obstructing the entrance to [a] green field.”

Perhaps DLRCC should have followed due process with appropriate consolutation with residents.
One of the causes of this tragedy is the failure of DLRCC to provide proper traveller acccomodation over the last number of years.
It is not fair to demonise residents because the council suddenly compassion in front of an internationally televised tragedy and rushes to provide an inappropriate solution

    1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

Oh, it’s the residents who are being ‘demonised’, is it?
      I thought…

      Never mind.

    2. Bobby

Nobody is demonising the residents anywhere, even the traveler group says it just wants to get things sorted and simply points out that the development of ‘temporary’ accomidation is being hindered by local protests.

I totally agree with you about local concerns being heard and I think that pretty much any type of development, be it business, social or housing needs, should be fully engaged and communicating with residents nearby. But I think this is more about the long-standing and ingrained prejudice most of us harbour towards traveler families. Do you not think this is actually the issue? I don’t think it’s about the council’s incompentency towards travelers myself, that’s a given at this stage, it’s that people don’t want travelers there.

    3. Stephanenny

The residents aren’t being demonised because of something the council have done. They’re being criticised for protesting emergency accommodation for a grieving family.

Your comment seems to make out that the protesters are there objecting to the poor past behaviour of the council that you mentioned. Like hell they are.

We don’t have to choose between the protesters being dicks and the council being dicks. They’re all dicks.

      1. Stephanenny

For me given that I don’t own any property it’s not mine to offer but I’d certainly welcome them if they were accommodated nearby.

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Thankfully planning considerations aren’t just limited to those who brought property.

    1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

I’m staying out of this one.

      Translation;
I know I’m on the wrong side so I’ll just keep my head down and wait until it all blows over…
…unless they try to set up any temporary accommodation near where I live.

        1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

          I live beside Travellers.
There’s a halting-site right beside the estate I live in.
My girlfriend is a Traveller and when we have threesomes the other girl is also a Traveller.

You’re messing with the wrong kid.
          Stop.

          1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

I’ll go ballistic on you if you keep it up…
And Broadsheet will censor it, in true BS style.

The truth will always set you free, but only when you seek it.

      1. Paolo

Have a look round the country’s traveller sites. All laid on at great expense with free waste and water services but virtually all of them stinking cess pits with abused animals, and damaged buildings.

        Prove me wrong.

  2. Joan Burton

Wonder how DLR Cllr Madigan feels about this protest, she ran a NIMBY Traveller campaign but then pitched up to Carrickmines on Sunday morning with Enda , she’ll go far !

    1. All the good ones fly south for winter

I have no back yard. I have a window box. It’s welcome to one and all.

    2. Joan Burton

I agree but neither of us visited the site the next day binning our morals but with an eye to the forth coming election.

  3. tucker

The next time you take drugs, make sure they’re the ones that make you a decent, balanced, respectful person – I’d lay off the ones you’re currently on if I were you, they’re turning you into a jerk.

  4. tucker

My comment was meant for New Person A in response to his first rhyme which seems to have been removed, presumably because it was so reprehensible.

I’ve got a rhyme for you, New Person A, goes like this:

Roses are red, violets are blue,
    Stop being prejudiced.

What’s wrong with being selfish? Or hypocritical? Or abusing one’s position in society? Or being miserly?

All that aside, I don’t know if I blame the residents here. Not because of the ethncicty of the group to be housed but because the council which has long failed to make adequate provision for travelers is suddenly trying to force through ‘temporary’ provision without any planning or consultation.

This is the sort of stupidity which helps to fuel racial tensions.

      1. Sido

We’re probably hardwired for all the qualities, you’re so keen to show me you don’t possess, by evolution.
Selfishness certainly. I would imagine hypocrisy, abusing ones position in society are intellectual extensions of selfishness.
No idea where you are going with the miserly – I think you are probably throwing that one in for good measure.

I’m impressed – at how far you have risen from the animals that surround you cluster. You’re a truly wonderful human being.

        1. cluster

I’m not pretending that I am without human flaws. But that doesn’t mean that I celebrate these failings or accept them as immutable.

You asked what was wrong with being a NIMBY & I showed how stupid your point was.

When the term NIMBY is used, it is used pejoratively. It suggests that the target knows that something is required but just wants others in society to deal with the local effects – by definition they are out for themselves.

          1. Sido

“I’m not pretending that I am without human flaws. But that doesn’t mean that I celebrate these failings or accept them as immutable.” – The only thing you have showed me cluster, is your own stupidity, fashionable ignorance, and hypocrisy.

      2. cluster

Travelers are a separate ethnic group, that is a ‘socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural or national experience’.

They have distinctive accents, slang, until recently creol dialects, distinctive customs & social ceremonies, particular living arrangements, shared ancestry,…etc.

        1. Spaghetti Hoop

          And music.

But is it too much to ask for some abidance to laws, respect for the environment and social responsibility in return?

    2. Sido

We are all NIMBY’s Let me make three guesses about you..

      1) If some authority decided they were going house a bunch of white, sexist homophobes next door to you – would you object.

      2) If they were brown – would you be cool about it?

      3) Did you expect to be questioned like this in the smug hug box that is Broadsheet, and do you resent it?

If the answer to any one of these questions is yes and you are feeling a bit “squirmy” then you are a NIMBY.

      1. Sido

@ memes – That would be “forgotten” about people like me because you try to avoid us, we make you feel uncomfortable?

      2. Stephanenny

See question one attributes behaviours and opinions to people. Question 2 describes physical aspects people were born with. Do you really not see the difference here?

In question 1 the people concerned have exhibited shitty behaviour that might negatively affect me.

In question 2 I know absolutely nothing about how the people might affect me.

        Do you see?

  5. veritas

dlrcc have proved that they are not acting in good faith when they talk of temporary sites, the temporary site where the tragedy happened was in existence for seven years and until the terrible events recently nothing was being done to replace it with a permanent site.If the dlrcc told me they needed a site near my home on a temporary basis regardless of the proposed use I would question their bona fides. If I could trust the council then I would have no objection but how many on this site can say they trust the council.

  6. Truth in the News

Ten days ago a 90 year old Pensioner was taken to court in respect of the
installation of a Satellite Dish on her dwelling, and now another Council want
to undertake a development and could not be bothered to consult with nearby
residents, are they exempt from Planning in other words is it one law for the Council
and another for the rest of us, what about Councils restricive planning rules on
giving planning permission only to those who can prove that they from the area
they seek planning in…..Wicklow a case in point.
However the residents should talk to and meet those who have been affected by
the loss and leave the Council and the Pressure Groups out of it. what has been
happening with accomodation with Travellors, is that they have been clustered into
Ghettos with years, yet rather oddly none have been housed beside Council Officals
leading politicans or even Judges – Why not.

    1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

Sorry, all I got from that was that you live in Wicklow and that you’re afraid of meeting new people.
All Wicklow people are like that. Calm down, FFS.

There was something about a satellite dish and a pensioner too.
She has some cheek, trying to drag you into the current century against your will.
      Burn her.

    2. scottser

travellers by and large want to be accommodated beside family members. the provision of traveller specific accommodation is open to them as well as orthodox ‘settled’ housing options. Oh, and do you honestly think that all dlr councillors come from killiney? no-one from ballybrack, sallynoggin or shanganagh elected to the council?

  7. parky mark

TBH, of all the halting sites I’ve seen, the majority of them are kept in a state. That’s the residents fault, no one else’s. I’d rather not have one close to my home.

    1. Paolo

I have three within 10 minutes walk. Each one a total disgrace but the residents of the sites don’t give a damn. I honestly think that if the sites were maintained then settled people would be far more positive about having them built in the area. Pavee point should be concentrating on that.

      1. Anomanomanom

Pavee point are useless loud mouths. They ignore the facts and like my travellers try the old “but as a minority group” bollox.

        1. Bobby

Yeah, apart from the work that pavee point do with travelers and roma people and in particular, working with ‘at risk’ people within those communtites that has had amazing benefits to all who participate. Yeah, they’re usless becuase they ignore ‘the facts’.

Why don’t you enlighten us with your intellectual knowledge and prowess that seems to have eluded the rest of us plebs who get our, quite obviously wrong, facts from silly reports, boring studies, lengthy investigations and hands-on work. Just because you’re not used to and/or have not experienced disgusting, blanket prejudice directed at you doesn’t mean you’re justified in blurting out that ‘deh factz’ say otherwise to peoples assertations.

‘Deh factz’.. always there to help you out and when you can’t produce and defend a decent discussion or argument..

Can I take this opportunity to apologise to anyone who answered one of my earlier posts?
-They’ve all been deleted, and that makes your responses look a bit silly.

I swear I didn’t know this was going to happen…
    He, he, he…

    No, seriously.
    snigger

    I’m not messing.
I have the utmost respect for ALL the vanity queens on this site, and that will never change.

Peace and Love, like in the movies.

    1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

This is going to be censored, I know it will.
      I’ve said it twice already
It’s been censored (Deleted) twice already, but it’s true…

Both of my girlfriends are Travellers.
We do threesomes and we like it.

      Never hurt nobody, ever.
      Only Broadsheet.

      1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

I’m just saying that that;s where I come from.
I’m not like the rest of you.

        I’m straight.

    2. 15 cents

you most certainly did not delete them ..because i just read them all and had a good old snigger to myself, and even the odd chuckle.

  9. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

    Dear Broadsheet,
thank you for deleting most of my posts and only leaving the ones that make me seem like I’m as deluded as the rest of your contributees.

    Beauties.
    Contra-Beauties.

    It doesn’t matter.
I’m goilg to have a walk ald forget about it.
You should do the same, because you’re good at that.

    1. sǝɯǝɯ ʇɐ pɐq

      PS.
Try not to confuse me with someone who gives a damn.
That’s a crown that I’m always pressured into accepting, but it doesn’t fit.

I honestly have no idea where my vocabulary comes from.
      I think with my dick.
My brain is in my dick, and it’s bigger than yours. (Joke)

      I jest, of course.
The biggest dick is not me.

    2. Sido

@ memes – You will recall that was my third point (below now, it seems) The smug Broadsheet hugbox one.

In truth Broadsheet practices its own NIMBYism. How ironic that you are now the victim of it :-)

  10. Eamonn clancy

Feel free to pop into Labre Park on the Kylemore Road and see what a wonderful example of the Travelller lifestyle awaits…and experience what we, in the environs, have had the pleasure of living with for decades.

  11. John

if ye all love travelers so much let them live in ur front garden. most of them are violent, welfare grabbing, cousin loving criminals, that’s the reality of it.
