Liam Doran, general secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, spoke to Audrey Carville on RTÉ’s News At One this lunchtime following INMO members voting for strike action on December 15.
Towards the end of the interview Ms Carville asked Mr Doran about his salary, in light of the controversy over salaries at the Irish Farmers’ Association.
Audrey Carville: “I just want to ask you, finally, on another issue. It’s to do with the controversy over the pay of leading members and senior executives in the IFA [Irish Farmers’ Association]. And you might be aware that you are one of 20 union representative body leaders, in the Irish Independent today, who haven’t disclosed what they earn. Do you want to tell the public now what you earn?”
Liam Doran: “No, I’ve no further comment to make on that. That’s between, the INMO is a good employer for all of its staff, including myself.”
Carville: “Do you now think the public has the right to know?”
Doran: “I’ve no further comment to make. That’s a matter between the IMO is a good employer and for myself and the other staff in the organisation.”
Carville: “Who funds your salary?”
Doran: “Members.”
Carville: “Members. And do you think nurses and midwives would like to know what you earn?”
Doran: “But sure our structure is dealt within the executive council and our annual conference every year so I have no difficulty that our membership, through the branches, know what the grading structure is in operation in the house. That’s what it’s always been and I presume that’s what it will continue to be.”
Carville: “I’m just wondering, like the IFA, you know, might the members at grassroots be surprised and angry at what the executive earns.”
Doran: “Well, I have, I believe I have absolute confidence in the executive council that governs all employment relation issues in the organisation and I think they totally respect the executive council and, as I said, I’ve no further comment to make on that.”

I assume you have some facts to back up your rant, I’d be interested to read them.

A wander around SIPTU accounts department would prove most interesting for any wide eyed hack.

They should all be forced to disclose. Simple as. No reason in the world to keep it secret from members.
The unions run themselves like businesses – they’re more interested in growing membership than representing their members. I’d wager that Liam Doran is on many multiples of the average salary of the people he purports to represent.
Trades Unions have morphed into institutions devoted to the protection of the entitlements of their middle-class, middle aged and increasingly female members (teachers, nurses, public servants, etc). In the real world of part time working, zero hours contracts and exploited minimum wage workers they are an irrelevance. I don’t know what Doran is paid, but, whatever it is, it is too much. He has singularly and repeatedly failed repeatedly to deliver for nurses.

Is it the fact the unions (“CLAIM”) to look after their members who are professionals or some of those professionals are women that irks you the most?

Is your objection that some people’s working conditions are so sh1te that we might as well just throw in the towel and let whatever unscrupulous employers run rough-shod over their employees who want to?
Is your objection to unions based on dislike of the perception and wages of one man – rather than the performance of the union as a whole in representing its members?

So you think that if Unions are representing professions that are mostly women, they should just give up and let them all be given zero hour contracts?

I’ll disagree with your assertion that the unions are increasingly for females. Do the bus drivers and rail workers not have a trade union? And there are more men in those industries than women. You are probably right about there being more women in nursing and teaching. And the rest of your comment is spot on. Couldn’t agree more.

Here is a question for Liam, and I only ask because a friend of mine tried to leave his union he was so embarrassed by their behavior , it wasn’t possible to leave . So is it possible and if so How do you leave a PS/CS union?
If the Government is not satisfied with union behavior, here is an idea….. Stop collecting union subscriptions through payroll , let the Unions collect their own subscriptions from their own members
As nurses who pay our Membership fees to the INMO we have been asking about his salary for years! Never gotten an answer!
Hi John, in that scenario I would just cancel my membership, after all you are funding his salary and in my opinion have a right to know.
