The Unforgettable Ire

Last night.

U2’s concert at the 3Arena included – during the song ‘Raised By Wolves‘ – a memorial to the victims of the Dublin-Monaghan bombings, an allegedly ‘false flag’ event involving the British Army and the Ulster Volunteer Force that killed 33 people.

The death toll was the greatest loss of life on a single day of the ‘Troubles’. No one has ever been charged with the bombings.

Helmet hair in a fetching shade of foxbollock. And yet, there’s something about him I always dig: probably his earnestness.

It’s the modern version of the comb over. Watch TV interviews, his hair has thinned so much I’d not be surprised if he invests hair volumnising research.

I’ve heard good reports of the gig. Am I allowed dislike the man, enjoy the performance, like I do with Tom Cruise? Someone tell me ! :)

Yes, of course. You are expected to mumble “shut up and sing” when he starts testifiying.

I saw them in Belfast and it was, as usual, an excellent show.

Heard great reports too. They’re a successful band – with a professionally-produced show that seems to offer fans what they want…I don’t have a problem with this.

Only on broadsheet would you have to ask such a rhetorical question.

Even though his voice isn’t what it was in their pomp, they’re still one of the best live acts around

I saw the ’05 tour in both Dublin and New York. Loved it! New York for the spectacle, Croker for the buzz. Both great nights, but I’m not in any rush to see them again. Could get three or more gigs somewhere else for the price :)

U2 also played the song at their Belfast gigs with (presumably) the same video listing numerous atrocities from the troubles (Bloody Sunday, Bloody Friday, the Miami Showband and so on right up to Omagh) and showing pictures of the victims. I believe they did this at all their concerts.

forgive my ignorance but in what way would it be a “false flag” event? it’s pretty widely accepted that the UVF did themt. A “false flag” event would seem to suggest that the Irish government covertly planned and carried it out?

    1. John O'Reilly Esq

false flag meaning not carried out by those who it seems did carry it out.

ergo in this case, it seems that the loyalist paramilitaries carried it out, but actually somebody else did it.

      that somebody else being HMG

      1. Martin

ok, well pretty much nobody actually believes that as far as I can tell, it’s pretty widely documented that it was the UVF with probably collusion from the British security forces, as with many loyalist paramilitary actions.
nothing “false flag” about it at all really.

‘pretty widely documented that it was the UVF with probably collusion from the British security forces’

That ‘probably colluison’ is worth pursuing, no?

If it is widely susepcted that the British state was heavily invovled in bombing the Republic in recent times, it is worth digging a little deeper, no?

Of course it was a false flag event. Sure didn’t Haughey, in a tantrum enduced fit at that stage, press the button?

All the usual suspects are having a day off to recover from the great concert they were at last night…..
