Fair play to Sr McGarry. There’s a perception that the church has no role in the post-modern era. An “acceptance” that it’s been consigned to the dust bin of the past. Which could not be further from the truth. Today’s troubled world needs a message of hope now more than ever. Europe has forgotten its roots and lost its way. Anyway, Catholics such as Sr McGarry are environmentalists in the authentic sense, not because they are conscious about the separation of their rubbish or “acid rain” or “global warming” or “melting icecaps” or “rising sea levels” or whatever (as the EU have been hammering into the heads of school kids for 20+ years now), but because they regard the earth as a temporal, transitionary place. A gift from God that must be utilised and distributed wisely.

No one has stopped anyone else from expressing an opinion. They’ve merely disagreed with it after it’s been expressed. That’s how debate and free speech work.

Iif anyone on this board expresses a mildly pro-religious standpoint, it appears – and I could be wrong – that they’re usually leapt upon. Marian’s agreeing with responsible stewardship of the planet and I’ll go out on a limb to suggest that such a view is hardly anathema to the Broadsheet posters.

Because this is a site with many readers who are non-religious and disagree with religion’s prominent position in Irish public life. Again, ‘leapt upon’ as you put it is disagreement with a stated position. But no-one is preventing her from stating it, just as you’re not being prevented from agreeing with her. In short, I don’t see the grounds for your complaint.

        She’s being asked if she’s serious – aka “you’re trolling aren’t you?”

As Neilo says, doesn’t look good on anyone.

Marian, when you say “Europe has forgotten its roots and lost its way” which roots and what way do you mean? I’m guessing you’re not suggesting a return to the druids and tribal wars. Or maybe you are. Maybe you believe that a return to our drudic nature-worshipping ways might help stem the tide of Global Warming. Please clear up my confusion.

@Ms Piggy: thanks for that, I agree that all are free to contribute. My complaint is a mild one, at best.

“environmentalists in the authentic sense, not because they are conscious about the separation of their rubbish or “acid rain” or “global warming” or “melting icecaps” or “rising sea levels” or whatever (as the EU have been hammering into the heads of school kids for 20+ years now), ”

So being an authentic environmentalists means NOT being conscious about the separation of rubbish or “acid rain” or “global warming” or “melting icecaps” or “rising sea levels” or whatever (as the EU have been hammering into the heads of school kids for 20+ years now).

Your use of “acid rain” and “global warming” is odd given that this is what the science and 99% of climate researchers say is happening (ignore those bought off by Shell).

Saint Paul saw the amount of time Deluded appears to have on his hands.

And he saw that it was well for some.

WRT the Express and Examiner front pages, let’s hope this proposed treatment for Alzheimers pans out: dementia is a scourge for the sufferers and their families.

I like Leo’s climbdown on minimum pricing for alcohol which the European Court will rule is illegal on 23rd December.
What a moron the man is.

    1. Neilo

Minimum unit pricing is the worst kind of pandering to the Gin Lane constituency. Bigger, cannier retailers will simply discount their inventory and smaller traders – like your local offie that has a superb range of craft beer and is happy to order in more esoteric wines and spirits – will go to the wall.

Louis Walsh’s mother’s condition was also reported on RTE Radio 1 this morning at the prime spot of 8am.
Challenging though a diagnosis is, this is hardly public National news.

You can guess? I have a funny feeling that this strange little man will be a source of national embarrassment or worse in years to come.
