The addition of John’s address was superfluous; his mindset gave it away.
    Cork-a-doodle-doo!

I know very little about the Irish Rail City Breaks, but I do know that hotel prices in Dublin are often pretty extortionate compared to the rest of the country.

Because after seeing the Book of Kells and having a pint in the Guinness Storehouse, there’s not much to do other than dodging junkies on the street.

He is probably from Cork and is raging that the butter museum doesn’t get the same publicity as the book of kells or the storehouse.

            ‘Just as bad’

            Ha.

Dublin is a cosmopolitan, global city with a rich musical & cultural scene.

Cork is a reasonably decent provincial town.

Also, everyone knows that the first port of call for most visitors is Dublin. Cork is a small town and limerick and Galway are essentially just villages. Dublin is a tiny city, but a city nonetheless. Why anyone would go to Limerick is beyond me, city of culture? There isn’t a theatre in the place….

“Why anyone would go to Limerick is beyond me, city of culture? There isn’t a theatre in the place”

Eh excuse me, but there is a theatre. There’s a few of them.. e.g; Lime Tree Theatre.
There’s also the university concert hall out in UL.
Limerick also has a lively music scene.. e.g. Dolans.

That’s not even mentioning the rugby, Thomond Park for example.

        There are good markets too.

Just as an aside, there’s a good chance you won’t have to deal with junkies in Limerick. Oh and your bike probably won”t get robbed in Limerick.

Limerick is a great little spot. Granted it doesn’t have the sprawling derelict looking inner city flats you have in Dublin… Think of Dublin, but more quaint/less skanky.

Limerick is a great town and I’ve had quite the time of it there, but there’s a little bit of rose tinting going on there.

There’s some quite charming areas just around Thomond Park that would rival some of Dublin’s worst areas.

      1. Weedless

Sure why would they want to lose that? It’s the only thing they have that Dublin doesn’t have a better version of :P

      2. Spaghetti Hoop

Sure if they had no chip they’d never find their way back home immediately after a Croker game (and not one Dublin beer or tay drank!)

Oh come on, Cork gets way more press than other towns of similar size. When was the last time Tallaght was mentioned? I support our country villages, Cork is no exception.

Well, I can see how the Irish Rail marketing department would have difficulty in pitching Dublin city breaks to Dubliners:

“Travel by DART on your next Dublin city break. Visit charming Howth (Junction)”

    2. ahjayzis

I took a holiday in Dublin before when I was in college, totally recommend it. Got a cheap student hostel, did all the touristy things, it’s something everyone should do in their own city!

“Because the majority of the people in the country already live in Dublin, you Silly Goose.”

      That is factually incorrect.
We have about 4 and a half million people in the country.. the majority don’t live in Dublin. Who’s the silly goose now?

  4. Mister Mister

We’ve enough culchies as it is already here, particularly those born with chips on their shoulders.

Is Mr. Talty being misunderstood by some people here, I’m trying to figure out his point.

Is he antagonising the Dubs or lamenting his lack of options? To be fair it could be either from a Cork man.

  6. 15 cents

because the majority of the country live in dublin … and go on country breaks .. and corkonians dont tend to go on dublin breaks because of hate.

      1. pedeyw

They’re incorrect but the the population of County Dublin is still roughly the same as the entire population of Munster and the population of Dublin City is about the same as all of Connacht so advertising focused on Dublin people probably makes sense.

  7. Anne

“Irish Rail advertises city breaks to “places like Galway, Limerick and Cork”.
    Why not to Dublin?”

Probably because a lot of Jackeens think there’s nothing outside of Dublin for them… they’ve heard of spots down the country, but they prefer the likes of Torremolinos to mingle amongst their own.. it’s tropic..
