Last night’s TV3 Leaders’ Debate, from left: Gerry Adams, Enda Kenny, Joan Burton and Micheál Martin

Last night the big wigs of our state,
Together stood up to the plate,
And made some hot air,
As if we would care,
What was said in the heated debate.

I don’t like the man, but he stood head and shoulders above the other cretins. He must have loved the debate.

I watched the first 30 mins and really thought Adams and Martin were far better than Kenny and Burton. Adams shaded it for me but then maybe the other hour things changed as all the papers have Martin winning.

I hope that FF have learned from the past. Easier to forgive them of their past than SF/IRA.

FF/FG seems to be the way at the moment!

If I’m being honest I would like to see the traditional opposition parties get a chance. To see if the election promises they make are actually viable. But I believe it would take some of the arrogance of FF&FG, which, frankly both of them need along with a large kick in the arse.

Martin was always good at debate rhetoric. Always sounding confident. It’s all nonsense though. It’s FF for fupp sake. Not a hope I’d vote for them.

I swear to God, I thought there was a new exhibit in the wax museum after seeing that photo.

I never realised Enda Kenny was so short. Though Gerry appears to be stooping over a little to compensate; that was nice of him.

  4. Perricrisptayto

Gerry Adams stood out as the most calm and collected of the four.
    Burton came across as demented,
    Kenny his usual gombeen self,
Martin looked good but who could ever trust this man again.

Most gunmen find that a steady hand is needed to execute widows. Nice to know that Gerry ‘Two Cops Murdered In My Constituency By PIRA Gene Pool Scumbags And I’ll Still Top The Poll’ Adams remains cool and nerve-free.

The Peace Process that’s seen racketeering and Provo-licensced murders get bedded in all over the border counties while the government of Northern Ireland grinds to a halt? Where do I sign up for that?

        1. Tish Mahorey

Would you prefer the old days when you still had racketeering and also British army on the streets, RUC intimidating school children, sectarian murders of Catholics and Protestants?

What NI has now is paradise compared to the 70s and 80s. You probably weren’t even born then. Probably can’t remember the sacrifices made to bring about the peace.

Loose talk like yours serves to undermine the Peace Process and show contempt for all who brought it about.

The world looks towards that process as a beacon of hope for ending other conflicts. But you just have to get your little dig in.

          1. Neilo

Loose talk, huh? That makes me sound like a ‘tout’ which is something ‘the boys’ aren’t awfully fond of.

You forgot the RUC, British Army, UDA, UFF, UVF, MI5, Red Hand Commandos.

Nobody said anything about being noble.

Constantly harking back to the past as a way to dodge contemporary political debate is hollow, shallow and going nowhere.

          1. Neilo

The past? Murders of police officers in this jurisdiction in 2013 and 2015 by IRA brand ambassadors are the past? Slab Murphy and his 625,000 pile of dirty money dug out of the ground in Hackballscross has faded away from memory? One would have to have have a very narrow frame of historical reference to not include these facts into contemporary political debate.

          2. Rob_G

“You forgot the RUC, British Army, UDA, UFF, UVF, MI5, Red Hand Commandos.”

            – I wouldn’t vote for any of the above were they to go for election, either.

It’s difficult not to harken back to the past while SF can’t seem to leave its past behind: using convicted child murderers on the canvass in the north, while in my own constiuency (Dublin Bay North), SF’s candidate was unable to condemn the killing of Jerry McCabe, instead saying something along the lines of: “Well, it was a war, shit happens”.

      2. Nigel

This is the Political Process. It’s largely bloodless, but don’t expect it to be anything less than savage and ugly.

Martin came out of it well, Kenny cannot think on his feet and the only thing Burton had to say was ‘ we’ll do the same again ‘. Adams remained remarkably calm given that the other 3 were trying to exploit the current gangland issue.

What I found most distasteful was the lack of basic manners. Kenny and Martin appeared to think that it was acceptable to constantly interrupt. Shouting other people down does neither any favours. It just makes them look like bullies.

    1. rory

I agree with most of what you said there. But your second paragraph is the reason I think Adams actually did better than Martin overall.
Saying that, Adams didn’t come out of it unscathed either. The section on the special criminal court springs to mind.

  7. Tish Mahorey

Burton and Kenny are ECB puppets. That’s the reason they come across so poorly. They have no belief in what they are spouting. Fighting a losing battle. They don’t have the courage of their convictions.

People can speak in hyperbole, mate. You don’t have to take every word uttered against Labour literally. They’re angry and with reason.

          1. ReproBertie

People can take the mick, mate. You don’t have to jump to the defence of everyone.

I’ll be expressing my anger and disappointment by not voting Labour this time round which I’m only saying to head off accusations of shill. I’ve never voted FG and that won’t be changing.

          2. MoyestWithExcitement

Sure they can take the mick but when people take the mick out the government you’re there to defend them every time. I’m just saying relax.

          3. ReproBertie

Everytime? You’re massively overestimating the time I spend here. Also, I’m not defending the government. I’m taking the mick out of Enda’s biggest fan.

            Let me see…

            – on April 1st he will be at his secret lair under Death Mountain, meeting with George Soros, Doctor Colossus, and the Egg Marketing Board.

Fine Gael are sickened that Kenny came across so badly and now it looks like their ‘Fiscal Space’ is even more way off the mark than they said last week.

They’re making promises that they know they can’t keep. The global economy is tanking. 2008 is happening again which would mean even worse cuts by Fine Gael, effecting the most vulnerable. Crime will sky rocket under them because they won’t protect social enterprise and law enforcement.

      1. rory

Which party/coalition would you prefer to be the next government Rob_G? (If you’ve decided on that yet.)

Well here’s Deutsche Bank worse than lehmans

        http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-02-11/deutsche-bank-back-5-year-cds-soar-record-high

“”Worse than Lehman” is how one European bond market trader described the carnage this week as the brief respite that ECB monetization and debt-buyback rumors provided yesterday have morphed into utter destruction this morning. European (and US) banks are a sea of contagious red with Deutsche Bank the tip of the collapse spear. Credit risk on Deutsche has exploded this morning with Sub CDS trading up 85bps to a record high 540bps… eerily reminiscent of the pre-Lehman bankruptcy week in 2008.”
