The Guardian reports:
Harper Lee, whose 1961 novel To Kill a Mockingbird became a national institution and the defining text on the racial troubles of the American deep south, has died at the age of 89.
Lee, or Nelle as she was known to those close to her, had lived for several years in a nursing home less than a mile from the house in which she had grown up in Monroeville, Alabama – the setting for the fictional Maycomb of her famous book. The town’s mayor, Mike Kennedy, confirmed the author’s death.

Never really got that book. It’s fine, but it’s not great, not something that you’d bother re-reading once you hit your late teens.
i think its about the time in your life that you read it. Its about nostagia for the energy of your teens and syncs perfectedly with that ages own awareness of ethics, the desire to change things and a growing awarenerss of the unfairness of the world.

I heard on the radio that Umberto Eco has died as well.
It’s a mystery to me why Mockingbird receives such renown. It’s an adequate book which benefited from a perfect storm of social issues.
It benefited from her ability to crystallise those social issues in a compelling and resonant story.
I only recently read TKAMB recently and was completely bowled over by it. I see what the fuss was about. RIP.
