Aisling Kennedy, in the Dublin Gazette, reports:

A young man was found dead in St Stephen’s Green park [in the wooden gazebo in the middle of the park] on Monday morning. An investigation is currently under way to find out the cause of his death.

The man, who has yet to be named by gardai, was 30 years old and it is believed that he was sleeping rough in the park. He was found at 9.15am on Monday, April 25.

Sinead Kane, a founding member of Hope in the Darkness, which offers food to the homeless outside the GPO on O’Connell Street four nights a week, said she received a phone call on Monday morning from a man who regularly accesses her food service.

She said: “He was very upset and he was crying. He said that he had just found a man dead in the park.”

Sinead said that the man, who doesn’t want to be named, rang her following the discovery.

He had just visited his local pharmacy to collect medication on his prescription but he was told he would have to wait 20 minutes for it.

“He went over to the park to have a smoke in St Stephen’s Green and he said he was sitting on the wall and just happened to look over to see a man lying on the ground clutching a sleeping bag.

“He shouted over: ‘Hey buddy, you ok?’ and he got no response. He went over to him, but he knew when he saw him that he was already gone.”

Sinead said that the man called an ambulance straight away and he called for help from people passing by on their way into work.

“Nobody helped him. People just turned their back and kept going about their business, they wouldn’t stop to help.”

…Meanwhile, in a further blow to the homelessness crisis, two homeless shelters are set to close in the next fortnight, forcing up to 150 people to return to living on the streets.

The 42-bed John’s Lane West hostel, which is jointly managed by Peter McVerry Trust and Focus Ireland, is set to close on May 9 to make way for social housing construction.

The 100-bed Bru Aimsir hostel at the Digital Hub on Thomas Street, which is run by Dublin City Council, is also due to close this Saturday, April 31.

In deference to the family and friends of this man, in this time of their loss, the Dublin Region Homeless Executive notes that there is no record of this man’s involvement in Homeless Services, or seeking homeless services on the night he passed away.”

    Our current government of bourgeois will do nothing about homelessness or about drugs. Until people take action themselves, it’s going to get worse, as they tut and purse their lips. Thirty years old; he should be working and bringing his kids out to the sea and the mountains and sitting in the sun with a loving partner. This is no way to die in Ireland in 2016, 100 years after an army of working people fought on the Green for a just country.

      The level of hate filled discussion is horrible. A bit of compassion wouldn’t go amiss.

      The homeless shelters are being converted into more permanent homes for people. surely that’s a longer benefit rather than having wondering where they are going to stay from one night to the next.

      We currently do not have a government.
      Aodhan O’Riordan was campaigning on drug treatment reform. But he was noted voted back in as TD.
      Kathleen Lynch was fighting to retain funding for mental health that Leo Varadkar was trying to use to shore up other health services. But she was not elected back. As acting minister for mental health, she was in the bizarre position of not being able to attend the Dail for the mental health debate because she isn’t a TD.

      Here’s the thing lads, there are politicians who were working on actual issues but the baying anti-Labour chorus got rid of them. That’s democracy.
      But hate, slogans and unwillingless to have an actual debate without descending into name calling is stopping real engagement with issues.

      RIP to the man in the park.

    Fine Gael are to blame for the hatred of the homeless, like Jonotti above. A generation of self obsessed, self adoring selfish individualists who don’t love, cannot be loved, think human interaction is just buying and selling, don’t want to pay tax but don’t want to admit to the social decay that causes.

    What was the cause of death? Can’t be hypothermia in April surely. And suicide can be a result of many pressures aside from sleeping rough. Wait for the facts I say. Sad to hear the hostels are closing.

    I’m that chap who found the guy in stephens green. It states that people did not come to help but after a few mins one guy did come to my aid. But there was nothing we could do. To the guy that wants to make fun of this. Shame on you!!”

          Most homeless people have phones, Dave. Fairly essential actually when you’re on the streets. And power to charge a phone and free WiFi are both easily available – doesn’t mean he’s on a top Vodafone plan, it just means he knows where to go to pick up a signal.

    We look on the homeless as though they are sub human but it is us, all of us, who are losing our humanity if we cannot feel for those who are destitute. A society is judged by how it treats its weakest members. How are we doing on that metric while people are dying on the streets?

    The homeless situation is not down to money because in relative terms it is short change. Yes some people have problems but no more than elsewhere. No doubt but there will be another round of staged political hand wringing. Also no doubt but there will be very little else. Shameful.

    Rest in Peace.

    Two things – first, it could have been hypothermia it was cold enough on 24/25 April and second, a lot of the homeless people I speak to (in London) won’t stay in the hostels because they don’t feel safe there, the better solution does seem to be permanent homes if they are well manged.

    RIP to the poor man who died, nobody should have to die alone in the night without a bed to lie in.

    PS my inner pedant is screaming at me to point out there are only 30 days in April
