“He’s a feckin’ tool, comparing Irish Nationalist struggles with slavery….. ”

Depends how far back you want to go, really. Didn’t that Douglass fella have a thing or two to say about it?

“I confess I should be ashamed to lift my voice against American slavery, but that I know the cause of humanity is one the world over.”

Ballymurphy is referenced by Gerry. He’s not referencing as far back as OConnell and Douglass, Gerry’s talking about… in his own lifetime.

That said, I don’t think Douglass saw the struggle of US slaves as the same as other peoples struggles, at least not in a direct comparison of what they endured…. “He who really and truly feels for the American slave, cannot steel his heart to the woes of others”.

I believe it would be wrong to say that he saw what US slaves endured was the same as what the Irish endured.
Where Douglass did see comparison was in the goals of these struggles, not in what the different peoples endured.

He was being tactful. Lots of Irish were enslaved and it was horrible, but even involuntary indentured servitude (the voluntary version was the JobsBridge of its day) was not as awful as the racially-based chattel slavery endured by Douglass. The shared suffering should be a source of solidarity, not a squabble about equivalence or appropriation.

You’ll find black people who regard equating Irish people’s experience in the US with their own to be quite offensive. I get it. Can you imagine how Jewish folks would react if northern Catholics started comparing pre 70s Stormont with Nazi Germany?

Dr Aidan McQuade of Anti-Slavery International (ASL), described it as “overblown”…. “When one makes a mistake the best you can do is own up to it.
“It is a case of somebody who is not particularly well read on this area of history and hence not particularly sensitive whenever he is publicly speaking on it but it ties in with that narrative he has of north of Ireland victimhood.”

Put that in your pipe Gerry.

Out of interest, did any party run any candidates who weren’t Irish and/or white?

        1. ahjayzis

That’s kind of mad if you think about how large Ireland’s immigrant population is.

A few Taoiseach’s appointments to the Senate are in order.

Wouldn’t call it mad with FF and FG. It’s about nepotism and farmers with them. It’s not about social change so of course they won’t have any immigrants.

Is that Joe Duffy demonstrating his outrage in a pre lunch trailer

    friends in high places Fla?

the media really went for him .. but in doing so, let their own mask slip a bit. SO they really focused on the ‘n’ word aspect, but at no point did any of them mention how off the mark and insulting it was to compare the plight of irish with that of african americans. suggesting they didn’t even see that as being wrong or insensitive.

      Go easy on him Frilly.
I doubt that he got much sleep last night.

      It’s like Porno-Christmas today in the Outside-House.
      Leave him be.
      He deserves it.

    2. sǝɯǝɯʇɐpɐq

      PS Frilly…
When you say ‘You’re kinda porno’,
…you know when you say that?

-That wasn’t a typo or anything, was it?
-You mean that Crumpets Offside is Porno for US, WE, You & Me alike and many others.

That IS what you meant, isn’t it?
      ‘You are kinda porno…’

      Tell me it’s true.
      Please.
      Even if it’s a lie, I don’t care.

  4. ...Truth in the News

The politically correct Dublin 4 clique, its not so long ago since RTE ran the Bachelors Peas adds and then you had Gollywogs on was it on another product.
Buried deep in mind set of the ruling orange class is that Catholics were in fact
White Niggers of the North, what was term uttered by Basil Brooke later to become so called Prime Minister of the North ” I would’nt have one of them about my place”…..yes never mind the Ballymurpy Niggers alone, most of the entire Catholic Nationlist population were treated just the same way as their Southern US Brothern….discrimated in jobs, housing, and voting, they only difference those
in America were black and those in the North were white i
The trouble is that Adams is reminding us of a fact that a lot of certain chattering
class in Dublin 4 want forgotten and which they were complict in allowing to
    continue for almost 50 years.
