I’m not too ashamed to admit that I bought the 12″ of Fergal Sharkey’s Listen to your Father. I was young. I know I shouldn’t but I kind of like it.

          2. Bertie Blenkinsop

For a bonus point what was the supposed link between “a good heart” and “you little thief”?

          3. Brother Barnabas

ah here, I challenge any honest man to put hand on heart and say he’s never had a sneaky youtube listen to A Good Heart.

          4. Bertie Blenkinsop

            Not only but also…

They’re both written about the same relationship / break up from different viewpoints.

( that’s not as interesting as I thought it was when I asked the question )

Its unbelievably difficult to sing all the way through. Great song though.

        1. Brother Barnabas

Could never quite catch the second line – lays me down with what?

Seeing as it’s 2016 now, I could probably google it. I might.

          1. Annie

I always thought it was “with my manchurians” but no…apparently it’s “with my mind she runs” – far more poetic, to be fair.

          2. Mikeyfex

Huh. I always though it was ‘with my Mansheerans’. Who are obviously a race of happy, peace-loving people – there’s no need to fight! – that you see when you inject herion into your veins.

  15. bisted

…Waterloo Sunset…because the start of an Irish summer usually marked me heading of to London to find work…by choice.

Gawd you’d miss Freddie, all the same. It wasn’t just the Stadium Rawk carry on of the 80s, but this grade-A daftness too…

      1. Lorcan Nagle

A Night at the Opera is an amazing album, you’ve got three classics on there: Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of my Life and You’re my Best Friend. Then there’s Seaside Rendezvous, and a full-on hard rock/metal track, a folk song about travelling at the speed of light, a prog epic, a dixieland jazz track about obsession driving your family away… It’s my all-time favourite album.

          1. Lorcan Nagle

It’s another great album! And apparently Freddie Mercury wrote to Groucho Marx to ask if Queen could use A Day at the Races and A Night as the Opera as album titles. Groucho replied, saying “of course you can. Please feel free to name an album after out next movie: The Rolling Stones’ Greatest Hits”. Freddie had the letter framed and it was a prize posession.

          2. ivan

Day at the Races as an album works a smidgin better for me too, *despite* Opera having some better songs. Sweet Lady is a pain in the hoop and Prophet goes on just a bit too long.

And on the obligatory Deacon tune, You and I is actually better than YMBF.

    1. Smashmouth

      The quintessential late 90’s tune

Right up there with Dancing In The Moonlight by Toploader

The perfect song to herald the irish summer would have to be “leaving on a jet plane” by John Denver in recognition of the students heading off on J1’s, the scores of ladies heading for the uk year round and anyone with a skill or a trade and an ounce of sense also heading for the airport.
Oh yeah and i’m away on me alcoholiers soon as well, yippee for me.
