A crane in central Dublin in April
Further to yesterday’s crane story in Cork’s Evening Echo…
Justine Comiskey, in yesterday’s Irish Times, reported:
There were 43 cranes visible over the centre of Dublin from the seventh floor of The Irish Times building on Tara Street on May 1st. This is a rise of three – or 7.5 per cent – on the previous month’s total of 40.
There was a slight increase in the number of cranes both north and south of the Liffey: the northside total rose by one to six while the southside figure was up two to 37.
…The Irish Times will be conducting its crane survey once a month to track construction levels in the city.
Number of cranes in use over Dublin city centre rises to 43 (Irish Times)

…Irish Times twitching to go with the two-part property sections and the reassuringly expensive townhouses..
Can they also get someone to stand up on the roof there and count the amount of cutbacks to various Dublin city social programmes being reversed?
What’s that?
None?
Needs more Derrick Davit !

I was so proud of that one….. a ‘derrick’ and a ‘davit’ are both types of crane :(
If you’re explaining you’re losing!
I know…. I had, high hopes for that pun :(

Some lucky job bridger is about to get some major Building Apparatus Cataloging and High Altitude Observational Skills experience..
Also known as looking out the window.
you mean Ocular Portal Visioneering?
All of them for building offices, not homes- the glut in office space coming (how many more googles and facebooks are there left?) and prices will collapse- we will all be bailing out the banks again in 2 years time because of this.
OK so I am not the only one that spotted this! Having been away from Dublin for nearly 3 years I was back recently and what struck me was all the office space for rent.
those fuppin scum bags – they haven’t learnt a thing. Irish journalism is as corrupt as it’s golden cirle

That’s great.. what a big increase 7.5%
You’d have a huge percentage increase if there was only 1 there before and now there were 2.. It’d be like a whole 100% increase.
Well said, Anne.
Isn’t there an epidemic of silly, unexamined figures and percentages these days?
Plenty of these are little different from standard deviations or margins of error – but they key thing seems to be get that figure in your report; “yes Sean, that’s a 4% rise from the 2008 figure” and so on.
Yep.. there sure is.
My favourite one is from current crush – Bob Reich (he’s small but mighty :).. the average height between himself and Shaquille O’neal he says, is 6ft 5. (Bob is under 5ft). He mentions it in relation to average income and says the median should be used.
Irish Times office is on a street with boarded up old council flats on it. How about recording how long they have been void?
It would involved them descending from their ivory tower to actually go an look.
I have been living back in Ireland for 3 years. When I moved back I found a 3 bedroom house to rent in north Dublin for just over 1000 a month. Now 3 years on I am house hunting again. Same area 1800 – 80% increase. Don’t get me started on the rise of landlords offering 6 month leases – 50% decrease.
Fupping outrageous greed and inaction from our pack of gombeens pushing people out onto the streets.
Inaction for the less well off, I should say.
There’s all sorts of schemes being set up that Denis O’Brien can avail off.. but that’s not interfering in the market at all at all.
Next we’ll be cheerleading increases in C02 emissions – a positive indicator of an economy going from strength to strength…
Two cranes swung passed each other in the sky when one turned to the other and said, “I like the cut o’ your jib”.
THE END
That joke gave me a lift.
