This lunchtime.
Outside Government Buildings on Merrion Street Upper.
Members of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors hold a protest over pay.
Dearbhail McDonald tweetz:
‘We need the bibs back, keep the T-shirts for another day,’ says one of the organisers of Garda protest outside the Dáil.
Meanwhile, around the front of the Dáil…

What the hell is going on in the second protest?
Water protesters hijacking the Garda protest which is why the Gardaí choose to go to the Government buildings side.
I can’t help but think that the likes of gardai and nurses etc. should be looking for better working conditions, rather than extra pay to compensate for having to put up with working in a broken system.
It seems weak of our governments that they’re much more keen to do that than do the hard work of actually trying to fix things.
…but will the garda estimate of the size of the protest agree with the AGSI estimate of the size of the protest?
Plenty of applicants for a garda position. Anybody who doesn’t want to do the job can look for work elsewhere.
They already work part time in Tesco.
And some probably even take bribes and deal drugs because that’s what happens you don’t pay your police force a reasonable wage.
Boo, sack them all and replace them with new police.
Boo, why do they need that much pay.
Boo, do what Reagan did and replace them all.
Boo, replace them with machines.
Boo. Boo.
Sure it’s only swinging batons and walking around the place, why do they need so much money?
Can’t help thinking you’re suggesting that those of us against the Luas drivers are inherently against protesting for better pay and conditions.
Note the lack of people attacking the gardai for this. You’ll see the difference if you concentrate really hard.
“Note the lack of people attacking the gardai for this”
That’s my entire point. Now maybe you should concentrate harder.
Because Gardai provide a service that deserves the high pay.
Luas drivers absolutely should be sacked and replaced.
You either believe in a right to protest or strike or you don’t for better working conditions or you don’t. I don’t particularly support Luas drivers demands but I firmly believe that have a right to strike.
Bad writing is bad. I put an extra “you don’t” in there.
He never said that he was against he right to strike. In the first reply, he even said: “Can’t help thinking you’re suggesting that those of us against the Luas drivers are inherently against protesting for better pay and conditions.”
Pretty sure pedeyw’s said that you either support the right to strike or you don’t meaning you can’t condemn luas drivers striking while supporting the Gardai for doing the same thing.
Sure, as long as he agrees with what the strike is about. “Luas drivers absolutely should be sacked and replaced” means he doesn’t believe in the Luas drivers’ right to strike in this instance.
I don’t believe in the luas drivers holding the public as bargaining chips no.
I respect their right to demand better conditions but not to be outlandish with their requests.
I hugely respect the manner in which gardai and public health staff go about striking, they never let the service suffer and always get full public support.
So you don’t support the right to strike then. Who are you tired call the drivers demands outlandish? And don’t the guards and nurses serve the public? Them striking isn’t using the public as a bargaining chip? Huh? Could you speak in reasons as opposed up meaningless slogans? Ta.
So how would you suggest the Luas drivers, who drive the luas for a living, go about striking? That’s what a strike is.
With the right to strike you also have the responsibility to use it reasonably.
The Luas divers were already over-paid. Striking in their case is completely unreasonable. Their actions really just make things worse for everyone and really undermine the value of unions.
Well now we’re into matters of opinion. I still don’t think they should all be fired for it.
Why don’t the overpaid middle ranks & senior gards take a pay cut to pay for the increases of the lower ranks.
Oh what like give them all each an extra tenner a month?
More erosion of workers rights and cutbacks, to help pay off our bond holding Euro masters.
There wasn’t a doughnut to be found in the shops at lunchtime….
It would be more in their line to support their member Sgt McCabe who they have ignored for years.
Good on them! They have a very valid gripe with the Govt regarding pay. Its ridiculously low for the difficult and dangerous job they do.
the government should hire bowsies to go in a bate the holes off the guards.
That’d learn them.
