To cheer herself up my mother used to play No Frontiers by Mary Black. Well it’s the song I remember most from when I’d get up on a Sunday morning and she’d have the record player on, toast on the table.
Since she passed I couldnt listen to or even think of the song without becoming a blubbery mess. Reeling in the Years 1989 caught me off guard more than once in front of friends and family.
I took her stash of records when we sold the house a few years ago, lo and behold there is the record sleeve. Alas, no record inside but what can you do!

For my mother it has to be Bay City Rollers “Bye Bye Baby”, it’s one of her favourites. At Xmas time being drunk and somewhat slightly worse for wear she danced to it after it came up on TOTP2 . The old bat when not hounding me to encourage my brother to make friends or annoying me to check her and me da in for flights is loveable and young at heart <3

I think it’s her way of telling me she was cool, and it’s great.

I normally roll up with a full P.A. on the back of a flatbed truck and me and the other guys start of with Police & Thieves, the Junior Marvin classic, our set touches on most musical styles of the last forty years, punk, new wave, we throw in a bit of a nod to Joe Loss the london big band leader before pressing hard on the angst switch and launching into Delaware (Not the Perry Como tune) but a rather rousing guitar drenched romp by U.S. shoegazers Drop Nineteens.
By now her foot’s tapping nicely and her neighbours are reminding her of the previous, we showed up, some guff about the public order unit which led to a residency in the Garda club on Harcourt Street doing Garth Brooks and Glen Hansard covers to some teary eyed sorts that missed mammy.
But I digress, she loves “Dress Sexy at my funeral” by Smog. Or anything by a Flux of Pink Indians.

To cheer up my mother I usually play any sort of Christmas tune by Frank Sinatra or the Rat Pack in general. The more out of season the Christmas frivolity is the better. She’s absolutely Christmas mental. Further evidence can be found in her recent purchase of decorations for a tree last week.
As it happens this day 7 months it’ll all be over and we can commence chocolate roses and movies on the sofa…
