From top: Car park of The Maldron Hotel, formerly Bewley’s Hotel, Newlands Cross, Dublin 22; Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness; Former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan arriving at a Public Accounts Committee meeting, January 24, 2014.

Former Garda commissioner Martin Callinan met the then Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman John McGuinness in secret in 2014 to say that Sergeant Maurice McCabe was “not to be trusted”.

Mr Callinan and the the Fianna Fáil TD had a secret 20-minute meeting ahead of the appearance of Sgt [Maurice McCabe ] before the PAC at the height of the Garda crisis.

It has emerged that, at the meeting, which took place in the car park of Bewley’s Hotel on the Naas Road in Dublin on January 24, 2014, the commissioner sought directly to convince the PAC not to hear evidence from Sgt McCabe.

This was six days before Sgt McCabe finally did give testimony in private to the committee [to outline his knowledge of extensive abuse of the penalty points system].

….It has been confirmed to the Irish Examiner that it was Mr Callinan who sought the meeting with Mr McGuinness.

Calls to the former commissioner for a response yesterday from the Irish Examiner went unanswered…

There you go now.

Martin Callinan is long gone and rightly so. John McGuinness was a disgrace to have this meeting and carry on a head of the committee while keeping it a secret. What did he think he was doing?

Is there not some legal implication for McGuinness having that meeting in private? I’m glad he did come clean about it, but why did he wait so long?

Given that Noirín O’Sullivan attended the PAC meeting with him, was she aware of this meeting?

Maybe for exactly what has happened? On a par with Maurice McCabe recordings – you never know when you’ll have to use them.
It’s now high time that Callinan is dragged before something like ‘The Commissioner Enquiry’. Him, along with Noirin Bán Garda, and the two buckos that were prepared to commit perjury until the recordings appeared.
I wonder is Maurice McCabe or any of the other whistleblowers have more recordings.

The irony of him using that word disgusting.. the indignation of it.

    Disgusting indeed Callinan.

Michael Martin is playing the dirty game of politics. Telling John mc Guinness “to tow the party line” and demoting him to boot. An garda were suggesting Maurice “lost” a priest paedophile computer as “he was a paedo himself”. Doesn’t that tell us of scum on top? Instead of protesting for more wages the garda should be out protesting for Maurice. Disgraceful conduct from phoenix Park and Shatter/ Fitzgerald. Disgraceful.

Seriously? That is just about as low as it can get. Although I doubt if John McGuinness is making these accusations without Martin’s say so. Then again what is he going to do once they are made, expel him?

Frances Fitzgerald is fully aware senior garda lied on oath and took no action. Whats the point at all in having a “justice” minister? Huff. Puff. Waffle. That’s what we paying for.

When Callinan was fired he should have been replaced by somebody from outside the police force. Appointing someone who had been in the force for more than 30 years told you that they were happy with the status quo. The fox is in charge of the chicken coop and the chickens are fupped.

      Not only that…
Nóirín was beside Callinan nodding like a dog in the back window of a car. . .

It has got beyond shameful in this small country of ours. Are we Haiti? No, even they got rid of Papa Doc, only to let people just as bad take over. Reminiscent of FF-FG anyone? The whole corrupt edifice has to be put in the wood chipper and a new start made. Down with political ‘dynasties ‘ which have served us so badly. Callinan and his ilk have been mere hangers on to the coat -tails of power, facilitated by a complaisant public. Come on lads, let’s be the generations who really made a difference. Think of the first Bill advantageous to the public to come before this new Dail – defeated, of course. Think of the appointments to the Seanad and to the higher echelons of the Garda Siochana. Think of the appointments made or to be made to every quango and semi state in the country, and think of the sudden rash of ministets, junior ministers and super junior ministers recently created. I ask you – how much longer should we tolerate this in a country of only four and a half million? There isn’t a sufficient number of us paye workers to sustain this level of corruption.

Listen, is it disgusting, sickening or disgraceful.
To use the Td speak, i was sickened, disgusted and disgraced, though being a Td, would take quite something to sicken and disgrace them.
Sick as a parrot on something.
    Helium perhaps.

McGuinness had no business agreeing to a secret meeting. What a shower. Good job Maurice McCabe had his wits about him and knew what scum he was dealing with.
